The new play "Frau Ada denkt Unerhörtes" is about the world's first female programmer, Ada Lovelace. It describes Ada's life in two parts: A biographical but heavily distorted first part, which seems rather dreamlike due to its dialog and cast, and a realistic-seeming second part, in which a future is imagined in which one of the machines Ada once invented takes power over humanity.
Our backdrop consisted of a slightly translucent curtain that divided the stage in the middle. In the first part of the play, the audience sat on the bleachers; for the second part, they changed sides of the curtain and then sat on low platforms at the back of the stage.
In order to portray the dreamlike nature of the first part, we only showed Ada's actress in front of the curtain; the other three actors, who played the characters of the mother and two puppets, were behind the curtain and could only be seen through shadows on it. The play leaves it open as to whether Ada is talking to real people, whether the events really happened or whether everything is just taking place in Ada's head. This blurring of fever dream and reality was articulated by the shadows on the curtain. In order to give the audience a feeling for the real Ada Lovelace, facts from her life were projected onto the curtain again and again.
In the second, very realistic-looking part, in which the audience is on the other side of the curtain, the three actors now stand on the audience side of the curtain in the roles of three scientists. Ada, now as a robot, stands slightly illuminated behind the curtain and seems to be clouding through the fabric like a dream. The moment she awakens to independent life, she changes sides of the curtain, steps out of the dream and takes over reality.
In addition to the blurring of dream and reality, the play is also characterized by power relations: In the first part, Ada is dominated by her mother and her many illnesses and has to lie down a lot. The actress sits on the floor throughout the first part. The shadow of her mother behind her is large and threatening. The audience sits in an elevated position on the stand and looks down on Ada.
In the second part, Ada takes over in the form of a robot, the audience is subordinated to her and sits on low platforms almost on the floor. The scientists are overcome by Ada and gradually leave the light cone of the stage.

The new play is a format, in a long-standing cooperation between Staatstheater Karlsruhe and HfG Karlsruhe, which deals with texts by contemporary authors. The students develop a staged reading that normally takes place in the Staatstheater's studio.
In the 2020 summer semester, the group developed a one-hour audio walk through the Südstadt, which was thus able to do justice to the time - in the midst of the pandemic.
The visitors, who gathered at the Staatstheater, were given a map with marked stations, headphones, an mp3 player and a place to sit on the go. The texts read by the actresses (Marie-Joelle Blazejewski
Lucie Emons), guided the participants audio-visually through the streets. The walk was supplemented by various interventions: e.g. the distribution of yoghurts, notices of apartments in the Markler*innen office, resting stations and a live moment with the actresses Lodi Doumit and Antonia Mohr in a vacant store in Schützenstraße.

"Frau Verschwindet (Versionen)" by Julia Haenni was published in 2019 by "Verlag der Autoren" in Frankfurt am Main.
A woman disappears from her apartment. The door is open. Is her disappearance a coincidence, did the woman make the decision to leave her home on her own, did something happen...?
The author sketches different women's voices, who sometimes enter into dialog with themselves, sometimes with each other. The themes of disappearance and the role of women in our society are central.
It is an act of emancipation. The play, which was awarded the Mühlheim Dramatist Prize, tells the story of how the daughter of Polish immigrants and her "chosen sisters" free themselves from the burden of the migration narrative in a rhythmically raging stream of speech and become what they actually always were: Goddesses.
The play "Tragödienbastard" by Ewe Benbenek was technically and artistically developed by students in the winter semester 2021/2022 as part of the seminar 'Das neue Stück' and transformed into a staged reading lasting almost two hours. The project was supervised by Constanze Fischbeck, Anna Haas and Eivind Haugland as well as Sandra Blatterer, who gave exciting impulses for the development of the lighting and stage concept in a one-week lighting workshop.
The staged reading will be followed by a discussion with the author Ewe Benbenek and the participants.

The spatial installation “Elastic Kin” shows a group of textile objects – Gefüge – that were assembled from discarded and abandoned garments. They exist as individuals as well as a kin. Assembled from used garments, found in the streets of K., produced by others in other contexts, they invert their original purpose by becoming bodies of their own, no longer dependent on being activated by a human body. The surface of every Gefüge is like a secret map, containing traces of anonymous hands working on them.
The sound in the installation is an echo of almost vanished collective memories of past moments and places. “Elastic Kin” attempts to depict a widespread kinship, that is imagined through invisible, loose and elastic threads mapping an international system of supply chains, workers and consumers, trend forecast and unpredictable zeitgeist, mass production and meditative handcraft. Which traces of these contexts do the garments contain?
The video shows a performative intervention in pub- lic space. It shows the Gefüge leading a new existence outside their production and marketing contexts: They return to the shopping mall, animated by the people, they once used to dress.
Ebru Inanc traveled for ten days outside of the touristic places of the city of Istanbul. In her own words, she got to know the “true face” of the city, and from it, a video collage was created, revealing a very personal impression of the current situation of the country. It focusses on the thoughts of the people she interviews; the taxi driver who had to cut his studies short out of family reasons, the engineer who comes from a small village but had obtained a scholarship in order to be able to study, the woman who is toying with the idea of leaving Istanbul but cannot bring herself to do it, the person who rents costumes, who can only relax when he leaves the city but returns anyway every morning. Turkey finds itself currently in a foggy situation. Nobody knows exactly how it could have come to this, or if, when and how it should go on. The constant back and forth is mirrored not only in statements of the residents of Istanbul, but also in the image of the city. The build-ups, the density, and the frenzy of the city drives people to their limits and yet they cannot turn away from it. The standstill emerges as a recurring element of Inanc’s work. The future remains uncertain.
What remains is a portrait of a spot of earth.
What remains is the sound of the landscape.
What remains is the telling of a story.
In her cinematic narrative, Elenya Bannert deals with the concepts of age, forgetting, the demands of our current times, and a life that is nowadays so hard to come by.
Matteo is old, and lives alone on an Alpine pasture. He is, however, not completely alone; his cow reminds him from time to time that she needs milking. Reading has become difficult for Matteo, and he has also become a little forgetful and peculiar.
The final film shoot began in March 2017. The idyllic village of Soglio in the canton of Graubünden / Schweiz serves as the backdrop for the story.
In order to be able to deal with image, sound and narration equally, the film consequently rejects acting, and the story is told through the eyes of the daughter, bringing the narrative character of the story distinctly to the fore.
The emerging cinematic material appears documentary in an atmospheric way and encourages the viewer to confront individual phantasies.

The exhibition "Häuser zum Anfassen" ("Houses to touch") deals with the exhibition of architecture. In artistic works of research, it deals with questions of representation, medialization, simulation and appropriation of architecture based on the model house exhibition in Fellbach. This exhibition was established in 1971 by the publisher Ottmar Strebel and is, by his own account, the first of its kind in Germany. Visitors can view, walk through and purchase 66 different, almost fully furnished show homes. The result is a hybrid of exhibition, scenic estate and simulated architecture.
What remains of an anniversary celebrating 200 years of the Badischer Kunstverein? After intensive research into the history of the Kunstverein and its exhibitions, we asked ourselves what was discussed last year and what remained unanswered. As an echo of the anniversary, we would like to return to a special feature of the Kunstverein's work: The history of the annual gifts. Parallel to the members' exhibition, it was only possible to present a small number of the remaining annual editions and editions, although it is precisely these more ephemeral and flexible formats that significantly reflect the Kunstverein's various programs.
The result is an exhibition of almost all the remaining annual editions and editions from the years 1842 - 2017, some of which are being presented to the public for the first time in a long time.
The works include some forgotten and out-of-print editions that were rediscovered during the research for the 200th anniversary or made available by members for the presentation.Noteworthy, for example, are the portfolios of association gifts from the years 1904 to 1919 from the private collection of Salem Castle, including the graphic Marabu by Friedrich Barth. The exhibition also shows works from the early context of the Karlsruhe State Academy of Art, such as works by Walter Conz and Hermann Kupferschmid. Also on display are three outstanding prints by Karl Hubbuch as well as editions by Otto Piene and a work by Wolf Vostell, who was represented in the groundbreaking group exhibition Kunst und Politik (Art and Politics, 1970). Posters, catalogs and documents will be used to visualize how all the works fit into the exhibition history, while the principle of the Jahresgaben and their genesis will be critically examined.
This is the first time that an art association has engaged with this principle of annual gifts, which are made available to the association by selected artists or newly produced and then sold to the members.
The beginnings of the Jahresgabenwerke are closely linked to the history of the art market and once a year the Kunstverein is involved in the cycle of buying and selling artworks. In recent years, press attention for the Kunstvereine's annual gifts has increased significantly, with major articles in Die Zeit, the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung presenting a cross-section of the works on offer from the institutions.International art magazines also regularly report on the annual offerings. The prices are tempting, as the works are often available for less than the gallery price and the works are no longer only accessible to members, but can often also be purchased by non-members - usually for an additional charge.
A team of art historians, art scholars, scenographers and designers has addressed questions of presentation and contextualization of the annual editions at the Badischer Kunstverein.
A multidimensional exhibition structure has been created for the presentation, which runs through all the rooms of the Kunstverein.
This structure develops from the successive removal of surfaces and makes the underlying raw material visible in order to illustrate new architectural and contextual connections. The variety of genres and media of the annual editions has grown over the last two centuries:
From collector's folders and lottery procedures to individually acquired editions and unique pieces, the concept underwent a similar development to the program of the Kunstvereine. The focus is particularly on the historical works, which are viewed and repositioned from multiple perspectives in the exhibition.
Not only do the annual exhibitions have a long tradition, the salon discussions also date back to the founding of the Kunstverein at the beginning of the 19th century.
We would like to revive this salon as part of our MITTWOCHS IM KUNSTVEREIN series.
Every Wednesday during the exhibition period, there will be a short lecture, a picture viewing or a performative contribution relating to the exhibition and the concept of the Jahresgaben.
More detailed information on the events will soon be available on our website, in the exhibition displays and via our social networks.

"Materials on Exhibition Design and Scenography" is a new publication series from the Department of Exhibition Design and Scenography at the HfG Karlsruhe. It deals with the design of narrative spaces as a critical design practice. Materials on Exhibition Design and Scenography is designed as an ongoing collection of material in which contributions to discussions in our field are compiled and made accessible. We view the individual issues as exhibition spaces and the printed pages as displays. We are not primarily concerned with the production of new contributions, but rather with existing materials that create new contexts and perspectives through their selection, combination, contextualization or commentary, as well as their designed presentation in print form.

The first issue of "Materials for Exhibition Design & Scenography" deals with exhibition design as an artistic practice that was increasingly used by artists as well as architects and designers as their own form of expression in the 1980s. An interview with the American artist Judith Barry describes how design was used in the politicized art of the 1980s. Helmut analyzes the complicated historical relationship between artistic and creative work and explores the question of the extent to which the social reformist aspirations of design have once again become the starting point for both critical and creative work.
