| Kurzbiographie | Prof. Charlotte Eifler is an artist and filmmaker who explores the politics of representation in relation to technology. Her works in the fields of moving image, extended reality, installation and performance address the intersections of queerness, digitality and speculative futures. Eifler's projects utilise experimental storytelling techniques to question existing power structures and imagine alternative forms of history production and social coexistence. Her work has been shown internationally, including at Sapporo International Art Japan, ACM Siggraph Digital Art, Los Angeles; Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden Baden, Art Basel, Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, IMPAKT Utrecht, Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen and RENCONTRES INTERNATIONAL Paris. She is a member of the networks unlearning canon _ intersectional teaching in Art & Design, Digital Critique, feat.fem, FACES - gender,art,technology and G-Edit. Residencies and scholarships have enabled her to carry out international research in Moscow, New York, Ghent, Mexico City and Paris, among other places. She is currently working as a mentor for the Kunstbüro Baden Württemberg. |

Die Kits enthalten Outfits, Accessoires und Motto-Sprüche, die die performative Konstruktion dieser Rollen greifbar machen. In Erscheinung von Erika Mustermann verkörpert die Moderatorin in einer endlosen Repetition die Rollen der IDolls. Als „Töchter“ und Nachfolgerinnen von Erika Mustermann tragen sie ihre Privilegien weiter und machen diese zur Grundlage ihrer eigenen Existenz.
Die Show nutzt satirische Überzeichnung, um den heutigen Individualismuskult kritisch zu reflektieren, der permanente Identitätsarbeit fordert. Sie beleuchtet die Widersprüche dieses Systems aus feministischer Perspektive und fragt, welche Normen, Rollenbilder und Erwartungen unser Verständnis von weiblicher* Identität prägen und einschränken.

The kits contain outfits, accessories, and slogans that make the performative construction of these roles tangible. Appearing as Erika Mustermann, the presenter endlessly embodies the roles of the IDOLLS. As Erika Mustermann’s “daughters” and successors, they carry forward her privileges and make them the very foundation of their own existence.
Through satirical exaggeration, the show critically reflects on today’s “cult of individualism”, which demands constant identity work. It highlights the contradictions of this system from a feminist perspective and asks which norms, role models, and expectations shape and limit our understanding of female* identity.

- "Erikas Töchter" untersucht anhand der fiktiven Figur Erika Mustermann Perspektiven auf die deutsche, weibliche* Identitätsbildung in Deutschland. Seit 1987 existiert Erika als Musteridentität in amtlichen Dokumenten – weiß, blond, blau- oder grünäugig. Als ein lächelnder Anachronismus geistert sie, erschreckend unkommentiert, durch die Bürokratielandschaft Deutschlands.
Die Arbeit übersetzt diese fiktive Identität in ein irritierendes Szenario, das zwischen Gartenfest, Ausstellung, Performance und Büroalltag changiert. Im Zentrum stehen zwei Ebenen: Zum einen die Präsentation der IDOLLs, einer Serie neuer weiblicher Musteridentitäten, die im Format einer Teleshopping-Show als innovative Lösung zeitgenössischer Identitätsprobleme vermarktet werden. Zum anderen der Blick in Erikas Büroalltag. Umgeben von Plastik-Buchsbaumbüschen, Teppichboden und generischen Büromöbeln ist sie gefangen im Moment des Fotos und der Reproduktion ihres Gesichtes.
Erikas durchdringende Augen blicken uns alle aufmerksam an, die Mundwinkel deuten ein neutrales Lächeln an. Doch je länger man sie betrachtet, desto schwerer wiegt ihr Blick: normierend, klassifizierend und ausschließend. Ihre Stimme, körperlos und fragmentarisch, erzählt aus dem Inneren dieses leeren Gesichtes und stellt die Frage, welche Gesichter und Narrative durch sie aus dem kollektiven Bild verschwinden.

- “Erikas Töchter” explores perspectives on german, female* identity formation in Germany through the fictional figure of Erika Mustermann. Since 1987, Erika has served as the standard identity in official documents – white, blonde, blue- or green-eyed. As a smiling anachronism, she continues to haunt Germany’s bureaucratic landscape.
The work translates this fictional identity into a scenario that shifts between garden party, exhibition, performance, and office routine. At its center are two layers: on the one hand, the presentation of the IDOLLs – a series of new female standard identities, presented in the style of a teleshoppingshow, offering an innovative approach to contemporary issues of identity; on the other hand, a glimpse into Erika’s everyday office life. Surrounded by plastic boxwood shrubs, carpeting, and generic office furniture, she remains trapped in the moment of the photograph and the endless reproduction of her own face.
Erika’s eyes look directly at the viewer, the corners of her mouth suggesting a neutral smile. Yet the longer she gazes at you, the more insistent her expression becomes: classifying and excluding. A bodiless, fragmentary voice accompanies the scene, offering insights from within this empty face and raising the question of which faces and narratives disappear from the collective image through her.

- Plastic Fugue als Diplomprojekt besteht aus vier Teilen:
0. Introducing ipcl, ein Einführungsvideo, das eine Produktpräsentation imitiert. CEO Framey von „Moberm“, einer fiktiven Firma, spricht darüber, wie Moberm aufgrund der Kindheitserinnerungen des CEOs beschloss, sein Geschäft auf Musikinstrumente auszuweiten. Das Video behauptet selbstbewusst die Multifunktionalität der air&dust-Instrumente, bleibt dabei jedoch letztlich inhaltsleer. Framey, die sprechende Figur, artikuliert indirekt die Erzählung der Person hinter dem Werk und stellt gleichzeitig eine von Stereotypen und Neoliberalismus durchzogene Kunststruktur nach.
1. Plastic Fugue, eine interaktive Klanginstallation, bestehend aus sechs Flöten (air 5-10, air Pp 1), die jeweils nur einen Ton erzeugen und über codierte Dirigierknöpfe ferngesteuert aktiviert werden. Die Reihenfolge der Töne ist jedes Mal zufällig. Die Fuge wird auf ihre Struktur reduziert und in ein Spiel mit Sequenz und Zeit überführt. Anstelle der idealisierten Ordnung stelle ich mir eine offenere Art der Klangmontage vor, eine Art demokratischer Kontrapunkt.
2. Sax Recital, ein Video, gespielt von Arno Arial mit der DIY-Saxophone-Serie, deren Mundstücke auf Open-Source-3D-Modellen basieren und handgefertigt aus PCL und PLA bestehen. Das Stück wurde aufgenommen, während Arial Kopfhörer trug, um klassische Musik zu hören, sowie lärmunterdrückende Ausrüstung darüber, um sowohl äußere als auch selbst erzeugte Klänge auszublenden. Das Video läuft im Ausstellungsraum in Dauerschleife und bildet gemeinsam mit Plastic Fugue eine gebrochene fugenhafte Gegenstimme.
3. Pp 1-8, air 1-4 und dust 1-2, frühe Instrumente und Polymer-Gemälde, bei denen ich keinen überzeugenden Grund fand, weiterhin traditionelle Materialien zu verwenden. Also entschied ich mich, sie stattdessen mit PCL und PLA zu schaffen.
Die oben genannten Arbeiten sind das Ergebnis eines Instrumentenbaus durch DIY-Praxis und Open-Source-Dateien aus dem Internet, indem die Illusion der klassistischen Form geschmolzen, vermischt und in biologisch abbaubare Polymere gegossen wurde, nicht nur mit der Hand, sondern auch mit dem 3D-Drucker. Eine besondere Qualifikation ist für die Herstellung nicht nötig. Die Bauanleitungen für diese DIY-Instrumente werden während der Ausstellung und auf der Website zur Verfügung gestellt.
Wenn das Publikum die Knöpfe drückt, spielt dieses neutrale Orchester eine fugenhafte Struktur, bei der sich alle paar Sekunden Klänge überlagern. Die Kontrolle über das Orchester liegt beim Publikum. Die Arbeit hinterfragt geerbte Hierarchien, sowohl durch Material als auch durch Methode.
Für Kinder, die früh gelernt haben, nichts zu verlangen, und für Erwachsene, die mit dieser Erinnerung aufgewachsen sind.

0. Introducing air&dust, a (introduction) video that appropriates a product unveiling conference. CEO Framey from Moberm, a pseudo corporation, speaks about how Moberm decided to expand its business into musical instruments based on the CEO's childhood memory. It boldly claims air&dust’s multifunctionality in musical instruments but remains ultimately hollow.
Framey, the speaking character, serves as a device that indirectly voices the artist's narrative within the work, while also reenacting the structure of art polluted by stereotypes and neoliberalism. The character is made with the virtual youtuber avatar technique.
1. Plastic Fugue, an interactive sound installation which consists of six flutes (air 5-10, air Pp 1) with air pumps, each producing a single tone and activated remotely through coded conducting buttons. The order of play is random every time as the buttons signal remotely.
The fugue has long stood as a symbol of musical authority and elitism, a form that represents technical mastery and the traditional hierarchy of composition. In my work, I try to break apart that formal authority, stripping the fugue down to its bare structure and shifting it toward an exploration of sequence and time. Instead of upholding its idealized order, I imagine a more open, accessible way of assembling sound, a kind of democratic counterpoint. You could call it a process of unmaking the fugue, of abstracting it.
2. Sax Recital, a recital video piece played by Arno Arial featuring DIY-Saxophone series, which is a quite decent structure of mouthpiece built using open-source 3D models and handcrafted with PCL and PLA. Filmed while Arial was wearing earphones for listening to classical music and soundproof gear on top to block out both external and self-produced instrumental sound. This piece is loop-playing all the time in the exhibition, making broken fugal counterpoint together with Plastic Fugue.
3. Pp 1-9, air 1-4, and dust 1-2, early-made instruments and polymer paintings which I found no compelling reason to continue using traditional materials, and so I ended up creating them with PCL and PLA.
The above instruments and paintings are the result of instrument-making through DIY-ness and open-source files from the internet by melting, merging, and mixing the illusion of classism's shape into biodegradable polymers, not only with a hand, but also with a 3D printer. However, any sacred qualification to make is not needed. DIY instructions for these DIY instruments are distributed at the exhibition and website.
When audiences press the buttons, this neutral orchestra plays a Fugue-like style, which overlaps sounds every few seconds. Placing control of the orchestra in the hands of the audience, the work democratizes a position of authority and questions inherited hierarchies through both material and method.

Framey, the speaking character, serves as a device that indirectly voices the artist's narrative within the work, while also reenacting the structure of art polluted by stereotypes and neoliberalism. The character is made with the virtual youtuber avatar technique.
1. Plastic Fugue, an interactive sound installation which consists of six flutes (air 5-10, air Pp 1) with air pumps, each producing a single tone and activated remotely through coded conducting buttons. The order of play is random every time as the buttons signal remotely.
The fugue has long stood as a symbol of musical authority and elitism, a form that represents technical mastery and the traditional hierarchy of composition. In my work, I try to break apart that formal authority, stripping the fugue down to its bare structure and shifting it toward an exploration of sequence and time. Instead of upholding its idealized order, I imagine a more open, accessible way of assembling sound, a kind of democratic counterpoint. You could call it a process of unmaking the fugue, of abstracting it.
2. Sax Recital, a recital video piece played by Arno Arial featuring DIY-Saxophone series, which is a quite decent structure of mouthpiece built using open-source 3D models and handcrafted with PCL and PLA. Filmed while Arial was wearing earphones for listening to classical music and soundproof gear on top to block out both external and self-produced instrumental sound. This piece is loop-playing all the time in the exhibition, making broken fugal counterpoint together with Plastic Fugue.
3. Pp 1-9, air 1-4, and dust 1-2, early-made instruments and polymer paintings which I found no compelling reason to continue using traditional materials, and so I ended up creating them with PCL and PLA.
The above instruments and paintings are the result of instrument-making through DIY-ness and open-source files from the internet by melting, merging, and mixing the illusion of classism's shape into biodegradable polymers, not only with a hand, but also with a 3D printer. However, any sacred qualification to make is not needed. DIY instructions for these DIY instruments are distributed at the exhibition and website.
When audiences press the buttons, this neutral orchestra plays a Fugue-like style, which overlaps sounds every few seconds. Placing control of the orchestra in the hands of the audience, the work democratizes a position of authority and questions inherited hierarchies through both material and method.

- Plastic Fugue als Diplomprojekt besteht aus vier Teilen:
0. Introducing ipcl, ein Einführungsvideo, das eine Produktpräsentation imitiert. CEO Framey von „Moberm“, einer fiktiven Firma, spricht darüber, wie Moberm aufgrund der Kindheitserinnerungen des CEOs beschloss, sein Geschäft auf Musikinstrumente auszuweiten. Das Video behauptet selbstbewusst die Multifunktionalität der air&dust-Instrumente, bleibt dabei jedoch letztlich inhaltsleer. Framey, die sprechende Figur, artikuliert indirekt die Erzählung der Person hinter dem Werk und stellt gleichzeitig eine von Stereotypen und Neoliberalismus durchzogene Kunststruktur nach.
1. Plastic Fugue, eine interaktive Klanginstallation, bestehend aus sechs Flöten (air 5-10, air Pp 1), die jeweils nur einen Ton erzeugen und über codierte Dirigierknöpfe ferngesteuert aktiviert werden. Die Reihenfolge der Töne ist jedes Mal zufällig. Die Fuge wird auf ihre Struktur reduziert und in ein Spiel mit Sequenz und Zeit überführt. Anstelle der idealisierten Ordnung stelle ich mir eine offenere Art der Klangmontage vor, eine Art demokratischer Kontrapunkt.
2. Sax Recital, ein Video, gespielt von Arno Arial mit der DIY-Saxophone-Serie, deren Mundstücke auf Open-Source-3D-Modellen basieren und handgefertigt aus PCL und PLA bestehen. Das Stück wurde aufgenommen, während Arial Kopfhörer trug, um klassische Musik zu hören, sowie lärmunterdrückende Ausrüstung darüber, um sowohl äußere als auch selbst erzeugte Klänge auszublenden. Das Video läuft im Ausstellungsraum in Dauerschleife und bildet gemeinsam mit Plastic Fugue eine gebrochene fugenhafte Gegenstimme.
3. Pp 1-8, air 1-4 und dust 1-2, frühe Instrumente und Polymer-Gemälde, bei denen ich keinen überzeugenden Grund fand, weiterhin traditionelle Materialien zu verwenden. Also entschied ich mich, sie stattdessen mit PCL und PLA zu schaffen.
Die oben genannten Arbeiten sind das Ergebnis eines Instrumentenbaus durch DIY-Praxis und Open-Source-Dateien aus dem Internet, indem die Illusion der klassistischen Form geschmolzen, vermischt und in biologisch abbaubare Polymere gegossen wurde, nicht nur mit der Hand, sondern auch mit dem 3D-Drucker. Eine besondere Qualifikation ist für die Herstellung nicht nötig. Die Bauanleitungen für diese DIY-Instrumente werden während der Ausstellung und auf der Website zur Verfügung gestellt.
Wenn das Publikum die Knöpfe drückt, spielt dieses neutrale Orchester eine fugenhafte Struktur, bei der sich alle paar Sekunden Klänge überlagern. Die Kontrolle über das Orchester liegt beim Publikum. Die Arbeit hinterfragt geerbte Hierarchien, sowohl durch Material als auch durch Methode.
Für Kinder, die früh gelernt haben, nichts zu verlangen, und für Erwachsene, die mit dieser Erinnerung aufgewachsen sind.

- Plastic Fugue ist eine interaktive Klanginstallation, die mit einer Kindheitserinnerung an die Konzertflöte beginnt, ein Instrument, das ich aufgrund finanzieller Schwierigkeiten nie erlernen konnte und das für mich zum Symbol des Klassismus wurde. Finanzielle Einschränkung ist nicht nur unangenehm, sondern lässt Kinder sich als ungeeignet empfinden, überhaupt etwas zu versuchen, und normalisiert dadurch Klassismus, selbst in der Kunst.
Es passierte mir erneut, als ich Malerei studierte. Die Materialien, Leinwand, Holz, Stoff, Papier, Farbe, Öl, ja sogar ein Bleistift, werden mit einer gewissen Aura vermarktet. Unsere Kunst ist längst zu sehr mit der neoliberalen Wirtschaft verstrickt, ironischerweise im Widerspruch zu ihrem eigentlichen Ziel, Freiheit. Die Qualität von Kunst über den Preis der Materialien zu definieren, ist eine Wiederholung alter Muster, so wie Blau und Grün einst als Zeichen des Reichtums galten und dem Adel vorbehalten waren.
Diese Struktur führte dazu, dass ich klassische Musik als die einzig wahre Musik betrachtete und die Leinwandmalerei, die im späten 15. Jahrhundert in Italien entstand, als den allein gültigen Standard in der bildenden Kunst. Jahrzehnte später erkannte ich, dass es jenseits dessen, was ich damals als Kunst verstand, auch Formen gab, die aus verschiedenen kulturellen Kontexten stammen und nicht als Teil dieses Standards wahrgenommen wurden. Dann versuchte ich, all diese ironischen Elemente in die verschiedenen Medien einzubringen, mit denen ich bisher gearbeitet hatte.

- Plastic Fugue is an interactive sound installation project that begins with a childhood memory of the concert flute, which I couldn't learn due to financial hardship, and which came to symbolize classism to me. Being financially debilitated is not only a discomfort, but also makes children feel unqualified to even try, thereby normalizing this classism even in art.
It happened to me again when I studied painting. The materials are marketed with an aura, including canvas, wood, fabric, paper, paint, oil, and even a pencil. Our art already conspires too much with the neoliberal economy, ironically, against its supposed goal: liberty. Classifying the quality of art based on the price of materials is repetitive, much like how blue and green, once symbols of wealth, were valued and reserved for royalty in history.
This structure led me to view classical music as the only true form of music, and canvas painting, which originated in Italy in the late 15th century, as the sole standard in visual art. Decades later, I realized there was more art behind the things I once believed to be art alone. Then I attempted to gather all these ironical elements into diverse mediums I had experienced so far.

- KNOWN UNKNOWN ist eine politisch-künstlerische Installation über die Kontinuitäten rechter Gewalt in Deutschland und das Versagen staatlicher Institutionen im NSU-Komplex. Das 15-minütige audiovisuelle Werk basiert auf über anderthalb Jahren Recherchearbeit und verbindet dokumentarisches Archivmaterial, narrative Textarbeit und digitale Visualisierung.
Das Hörstück rückt die Perspektiven der Betroffenen in den Mittelpunkt – ebenso wie die Lücken in der Aufarbeitung und die Namen jener, die direkt oder indirekt zur Existenz des NSU beigetragen haben: durch aktives Handeln, Mitwissen oder institutionelles Wegsehen. In seinem dokumentarischen Charakter benennt es Täter, Behördenverantwortliche und politische Akteure, zeigt Archivmaterial und gibt Raum für die Stimmen der Überlebenden und Angehörigen. Die Sprecherin führt durch das dichte Material stets mit dem Anspruch, Zuhörenden Zugang zu einer eigenen Haltung zu lassen.
Parallel dazu entstand eine digitale 3D-Installation – ein abstraktes, mehrdimensionales Netz, das die Komplexität des NSU-Unterstützernetzwerks visualisiert: jenes Geflecht, das im offiziellen Narrativ oft ausgespart bleibt. Die Installation übersetzt die Recherche räumlich und visuell, macht Strukturen erfahrbar, Knotenpunkte sichtbar und zeigt: Der NSU bestand nicht nur aus drei Personen, sondern war eingebettet in ein weit verzweigtes System aus Neonazi-Strukturen, V-Leuten, Behörden und gesellschaftlicher Ignoranz.
Erst im Zusammenwirken von Hörstück und Installation entfaltet sich das Narrativ vollständig: Das Netz beginnt zu sprechen, sobald es eine Stimme erhält – kollektives Zuhören statt Schweigen. KNOWN UNKNOWN richtet sich gegen die Vorstellung eines „Schlussstrichs“ und lädt zur aktiven Auseinandersetzung ein. Im Dialog zwischen Stimme, Stille, Raum und Visualisierung entsteht ein dichtes, forderndes und reflexives Werk.

- Als Kind wurde Minh Anh Nguyễn sexuell missbraucht. Mit ihrem 47-minütigen Essayfilm versucht sie, diesen schwierigen Teil ihres Lebens in Worte zu fassen, das Unsagbare auszusprechen und durch die Reflexion und Projektion der filmischen Praxis ein Gefühl für das eigene Selbst zurückzugewinnen. Die Filmemacherin offenbart dabei intime Gespräche mit ihrer Mutter und versucht, den schmerzhaften Prozess zu bewältigen, dieses Trauma an die Öffentlichkeit zu bringen. Mit einer zerbrechlichen Intimität bewegt sich der Film zwischen Fiktion, Archivmaterial und Dokumentation, auf der Suche nach einer Sprache, um das Vergangene auszudrücken und die Zukunft anzunehmen.

- As a child, Minh Anh Nguyễn was sexually abused. Her 47-minute essay film is an attempt to put words to this difficult part of her life, to speak the unspeakable and regain a sense of self through the reflection and projection that the act of filmmaking allows. Her film reveals intimate conversations with her mother and tries to overcome the difficult process of making this trauma public. It navigates through a wounded intimacy between fiction, archive footage and documentary in search of a language to articulate the past and embrace the future.

- „Manchmal ist Schmerz ganz leise“ ist eine immersive, autobiographische Hörstück-Installation, die den stillen und oft unsichtbaren Kampf mit einer schweren, namenlosen Krankheit in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Das Werk hinterfragt, was es bedeutet, in einer leistungsorientierten Gesellschaft plötzlich nicht mehr zu "funktionieren". Es geht den Ängsten, der Scham und dem tief empfundenen Gefühl des Versagens nach, das oft mit chronischer Krankheit einhergeht – Gefühle, die Betroffene selten teilen. Das Hörspiel verleiht einer Stimme Ausdruck, die für viele spricht und Einblicke in eine Realität gibt, die oft im Verborgenen bleibt.

- ‘Sometimes pain is very quiet’ is an immersive, autobiographical audio play installation that focuses on the silent and often invisible battle with a serious, nameless illness. The work questions what it means to suddenly no longer ‘function’ in a performance-orientated society. It explores the fears, the shame and the deeply felt sense of failure that often accompanies chronic illness – feelings that are rarely shared by those affected. The radio play gives expression to a voice that speaks for many and provides insights into a reality that often remains hidden.

- UMBAU is an online journal for the promotion of art, research, and design emerging from Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG).
In 1992, a time of major socio-economic and technological change, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design was founded as a “digital Bauhaus.” UMBAU, an architectural term roughly translatable as “remodeling” (to take a given structure and adjust it to contemporary situations) addresses this heritage and introduces a moment of destabilisation. UMBAU welcomes trans-disciplinary modes of thinking through the situational, the unfinished, and the transitional.
Through bi-weekly contributions from international artists, scientists, philosophers, historians and designers, UMBAU captures up-to-date research, while its annual editorial themes enable an in-depth exploration of ideas.
