- Als Kind wurde Minh Anh Nguyễn sexuell missbraucht. Mit ihrem 47-minütigen Essayfilm versucht sie, diesen schwierigen Teil ihres Lebens in Worte zu fassen, das Unsagbare auszusprechen und durch die Reflexion und Projektion der filmischen Praxis ein Gefühl für das eigene Selbst zurückzugewinnen. Die Filmemacherin offenbart dabei intime Gespräche mit ihrer Mutter und versucht, den schmerzhaften Prozess zu bewältigen, dieses Trauma an die Öffentlichkeit zu bringen. Mit einer zerbrechlichen Intimität bewegt sich der Film zwischen Fiktion, Archivmaterial und Dokumentation, auf der Suche nach einer Sprache, um das Vergangene auszudrücken und die Zukunft anzunehmen.

- As a child, Minh Anh Nguyễn was sexually abused. Her 47-minute essay film is an attempt to put words to this difficult part of her life, to speak the unspeakable and regain a sense of self through the reflection and projection that the act of filmmaking allows. Her film reveals intimate conversations with her mother and tries to overcome the difficult process of making this trauma public. It navigates through a wounded intimacy between fiction, archive footage and documentary in search of a language to articulate the past and embrace the future.

- Traditionell zum Ende des Sommersemesters lädt die Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe zum alljährlichen Rundgang durch die Lichthöfe ein und gewährt für ein verlängertes Wochenende einen Blick hinter die Kulissen der Hochschule. Zum Rundgang 2025 unter dem Motto KIOSK, vom 24. bis 27. Juli, werden die Werkstätten, Lichthöfe und Räume der HfG Karlsruhe wieder zur Ausstellungsfläche.
Die große Jahresausstellung zeigt aktuelle Projekte aus allen Studiengängen und Fachgruppen – Kommunikationsdesign, Produktdesign, Medienkunst, Ausstellungsdesign & Szenografie sowie Kunstwissenschaft & Medienphilosophie. In den Lichthöfen der HfG und an weiteren Präsentationsorten in der Hochschule erhalten Besucher:innen Einblicke in rund 100 studentische Arbeiten. Darunter finden sich beispielsweise Performances, Installationen, Videos, Objekte und Texte. Ein begleitendes Veranstaltungsprogramm mit öffentlichen Führungen, Filmvorführungen, Gesprächen und weiteren Formaten, mitgestaltet vom Allgemeinen Studierendenausschuss der Hochschule, bietet über vier Tage hinweg Gelegenheiten zum Austausch mit Studierenden und Lehrenden.
Die HfG zeigt sich beim Rundgang als lebendiger Ort, an dem Kunst, Theorie und Gestaltung in interdisziplinären Projekten zusammenkommen. So entwerfen mit „THE NEST“ beispielsweise drei Studierende aus dem Fachbereich Produktdesign einen lebensgroßen, nestartigen Pavillon aus regionalen, bio-basierten Materialien wie Hanf, Holz und invasiven Pflanzen. Die Installation reflektiert ökologische Wertschöpfungsketten und entsteht in Kooperation mit dem Bio Design Lab, das sich an der HfG auf regenerative Materialien und nachhaltige Gestaltungsansätze spezialisiert.
Studierende aus dem Fachbereich Ausstellungsdesign und Szenografie wiederum präsentieren beispielsweise ein mobiles Bühnenbild, das ein spekulatives Zukunftsszenario für das Jahr 2034 entwirft – mit Blick auf ökologische Kipppunkte, globale Gerechtigkeit und politische Handlungsfähigkeit. Die Arbeit basiert auf dem Roman „Das Ministerium für die Zukunft“ von Kim Stanley Robinson und entsteht in Kooperation mit dem Theater Neumarkt sowie dem Collegium Helveticum Zürich.
Am Eröffnungsabend des Rundgangs, am 24.7.25 ab 19 Uhr, vergibt die Fördergesellschaft ZKM/HfG Preise für herausragende Abschluss- und Semesterarbeiten, die von Professor:innen aus allen Fachbereichen im Vorfeld der Ausstellung nominiert wurden.
Unter den diesjährigen Nominierten findet sich beispielsweise das Projekt der beiden Studierenden Sophie Reißfelder und Luise Peschko, mit dem Titel „Manchmal ist Schmerz ganz leise“: eine immersive, autobiographische Hörstück-Installation, die den stillen und oft unsichtbaren Kampf mit einer schweren, namenlosen Krankheit thematisiert. Eine Fachjury aus Wissenschaft, Kunst und Kultur wählt die Preisträger:innen aus den nominierten Arbeiten aus. Die Auszeichnungen ehren besondere Leistungen und unterstützen die Weiterentwicklung von Projekten.

- Traditionally, at the end of the summer semester, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design invites visitors to its annual tour of the atriums and offers a look behind the scenes of the university for a long weekend. The workshops, atriums and rooms of the HfG Karlsruhe will once again become an exhibition space for the 2025 tour under the motto KIOSK, from July 24 to 27.
The large annual exhibition will showcase current projects from all degree programs and subject groups - Communication Design, Product Design, Media Art, Exhibition Design & Scenography and Art Research & Media Philosophy. In the atriums of the HfG and at other presentation locations throughout the university, visitors can gain an insight into around 100 student works. These include performances, installations, videos, objects and texts. An accompanying program of events with public tours, film screenings, talks and other formats, co-organized by the university's General Student Committee, offers opportunities for exchange with students and teachers over four days.
During the tour, the HfG presents itself as a lively place where art, theory and design come together in interdisciplinary projects. With “THE NEST”, for example, three students from the Product Design department are designing a life-size, nest-like pavilion made from regional, bio-based materials such as hemp, wood and invasive plants. The installation reflects ecological value chains and was created in cooperation with the Bio Design Lab, which specializes in regenerative materials and sustainable design approaches at the HfG. Students from the Department of Exhibition Design and Scenography, on the other hand, are presenting a mobile stage set that creates a speculative future scenario for the year 2034 - with a view to ecological tipping points, global justice and political agency. The work is based on the novel “The Ministry for the Future” by Kim Stanley Robinson and is being created in cooperation with Theater Neumarkt and Collegium Helveticum Zurich.
On the opening evening of the Rundgang, on July 24 from 7 p.m., the ZKM/HfG Sponsorship Society will award prizes for outstanding final and semester projects nominated by professors from all departments in the run-up to the exhibition. This year's nominees include, for example, the project by the two students Sophie Reißfelder and Luise Peschko, entitled “Sometimes pain is very quiet”: an immersive, autobiographical audio piece installation that addresses the silent and often invisible struggle with a serious, nameless illness. A jury of experts from the fields of science, art and culture selects the winners from the nominated works. The awards honor special achievements and support the further development of projects.

Über 5000 Videobänder – viele davon kaum jemals öffentlich gezeigt – dokumentieren eine Ära künstlerischer Freiheit und technologischer Innovation.
Als damalige Chefkuratorin des LBMA und Produzentin der visionären Kabelfernsehserie »Shared Realities« (1983–84) war Huffman selbst maßgeblich an der Gestaltung dieses außergewöhnlichen Kapitels der Medienkunst beteiligt. - „Manchmal ist Schmerz ganz leise“ ist eine immersive, autobiographische Hörstück-Installation, die den stillen und oft unsichtbaren Kampf mit einer schweren, namenlosen Krankheit in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Das Werk hinterfragt, was es bedeutet, in einer leistungsorientierten Gesellschaft plötzlich nicht mehr zu "funktionieren". Es geht den Ängsten, der Scham und dem tief empfundenen Gefühl des Versagens nach, das oft mit chronischer Krankheit einhergeht – Gefühle, die Betroffene selten teilen. Das Hörspiel verleiht einer Stimme Ausdruck, die für viele spricht und Einblicke in eine Realität gibt, die oft im Verborgenen bleibt.

- ‘Sometimes pain is very quiet’ is an immersive, autobiographical audio play installation that focuses on the silent and often invisible battle with a serious, nameless illness. The work questions what it means to suddenly no longer ‘function’ in a performance-orientated society. It explores the fears, the shame and the deeply felt sense of failure that often accompanies chronic illness – feelings that are rarely shared by those affected. The radio play gives expression to a voice that speaks for many and provides insights into a reality that often remains hidden.

Die Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Karlsruhe kann das Sommersemester 2025 mit einer guten Nachricht eröffnen: Neben einer Reihe neuer Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter sind wieder neue Berufungen zu feiern.
Wie gewohnt, wird der Eröffnungsabend auch für die Überreichung von Diplomzeugnissen genutzt. Neben einigen Grußworten sind außerdem performative Beiträge zu erleben. Im Anschluss an den offiziellen Teil des Abends dürfen sich Studierende und Gäste auf einen gemeinsamen musikalischen Ausklang im Lichthof freuen.

Herz führt in seiner Darlegung in gewisser Weise eine Genealogie des „Hitlerbildes“ aus, das durch die Fotografie Hoffmanns seinen Ausdruck fand: Beginnend mit frühen fotografischen Portraitstudien, die von Heinrich Hoffmann als Postkarten vertrieben wurden, eröffnet der Medienforscher Herz in seinem Buch ein Panorama, das nicht nur die Herausformung der Figur Hitler zeigt, sondern auch die darauf folgenden Bildgattungen, in denen Hitler als Mensch vermarktet wurde.”

- ‘With his exhibition at the Fotomuseum in Munich's Stadtmuseum and the publication of the same name ‘Hoffmann and Hitler - Photography as a Medium of the Führer Myth’ in 1994, Rudolf Herz laid an important foundation stone for research into Heinrich Hoffmann, Adolf Hitler and photographic Führer propaganda. In his account, Herz sets out a kind of genealogy of the ‘Hitler image’, which found its expression through Hoffmann's photography: Beginning with early photographic portrait studies that were distributed by Heinrich Hoffmann as postcards, media researcher Herz opens up a panorama in his book that shows not only the moulding of the figure of Hitler, but also the subsequent image genres in which Hitler was marketed as a human being.’
‘This volume is not the first attempt to introduce Adolf Hitler into society as an image constant. However, it is the first successful illustrated book that manages not only to tell the story of Hitler, but also to make him appear both as a leader and as a natural human being by means of a skilfully arranged sequence of images. It is no longer possible to reconstruct exactly when the illustrated book ‘Hitler wie ihn keiner kennt’ was published in 1932 using the volumes still available today. It is above all the recourse to the context that must help in the analytical consideration and categorisation of the volume. The medium of photography becomes effective a second time here, but not immanently (narratively), but from a historical perspective: a perspective that can also provide documentary information at this point, despite the propagandistic image concept.’

In his account, Herz sets out a kind of genealogy of the ‘Hitler image’, which found its expression through Hoffmann's photography: Beginning with early photographic portrait studies that were distributed by Heinrich Hoffmann as postcards, media researcher Herz opens up a panorama in his book that shows not only the moulding of the figure of Hitler, but also the subsequent image genres in which Hitler was marketed as a human being.’

- „How do imaginaries claim normativity? A society can only function if enough people envision the same imaginary, says Castoriadis. I claim, that new imaginaries need to be exercised, if they are to claim normative power. This paper investigates a homogenization process of a social imaginary: In the 1966 German civil defense exercise Fallex 66, 33 members of the West German parliament simulated the at this point intensely disputed Emergency Laws. This paper argues that the fusion of fictional and real elements in the exercised scenario, combined with a bodily and affective immersion in a bunker setting had the power to shift a social imaginary. By presenting the Emergency Laws in a conservative patriarchal imaginary landscape, the exercise induces a normative shift in the social perception of the Laws. This paper sheds a leftist light on the struggle, highlighting the political bias of the exercise, as well as giving a new vocabulary to the left critique of that time. With a unique conceptual set-up, this paper investigates the imaginaries transported by and the means of their production in the civil defense exercise. Hereby, I suggest a methodical set for the analysis of social imaginaries at the cutting surface of aesthetics, affect theory, contemporary history, and social philosophy.”

Auch am Beginn meiner Recherche stand diese Vorstellung und Partizipation damit als Phänomen, dem – sowohl von der Seite der RezipientInnen aus, als auch von der der PerformerInnen und der KünstlerInnen – zum einen mit großen Unbehagen, zum anderen mit großer Begeisterung begegnet wird.”

- ‘The participation of the audience in performance art - the title of the master's thesis - evokes the idea of a classic ‘participatory’ theatre or one of ‘participating’ performance visitors, in which the audience is encouraged to actively and productively participate in the events of the performance. At the beginning of my research, this idea and participation was also a phenomenon that was met with great discomfort on the one hand and great enthusiasm on the other, both on the part of the recipients and the performers and artists.’
‘The promise of audience participation is based on counteracting the conventionally passive and contemplative view of the artwork produced by a singular authorship. The unease about participation is expressed on the one hand in the scepticism as to whether participation can fulfil the function of activating the audience. Doesn't participation mean that the audience is merely ‘allowed’ to take part within a fixed framework and an existing concept? Does this not mean that they are still trapped in passive immaturity, but now, even worse, with the illusion of their own sovereignty? In the following analysis, I will show that the terms active and passive, self-determined and determined and the associated normative findings require more precise differentiation.’

‘Where the old is challenged by the new. Where art and theatre meet everyday and political life. It is not for nothing that artists have repeatedly called for the convergence of art and life. Because where the two collide, confrontation takes place. It is not important what exactly art is and where it begins or ends. What is relevant is that breaks are created in the smooth running of a problematic system. It is about a fracture of expectation, an interruption of the familiar. This strategy of interruption is interesting for the present work.’
