Prof. Charlotte Eifler (Professur für Mixed Realities) und Prof. Paul Bailey (Professur für Design in den Bereichen Visuelle Kommunikation und Forschung), zwei international renommierte Künstler*innen, die nicht nur das Leben an der Hochschule, sondern auch das kulturelle Leben der Stadt Karlsruhe bereichern.

Wie gewohnt, wird der Eröffnungsabend auch für die Überreichung von Diplomzeugnissen an unsere Absolvent*innen genutzt. Das Bühnendesign des Abends wird von HfG-Almuni Vera Gärtner gestaltet.
Wir freuen uns außerdem auf viele spannende Projekte, Neuerungen und Termine, die an diesem Abend vorgestellt werden. Beispielsweise das in Kooperation mit dem ZKM erstmals stattfindende Forschungssymposium „Shifting Paradigms“, welches mit internationalen Gästen zur Diskussion rund um Transformationen in den Strukturen künstlerischer und wissenschaftlicher Forschung am 5. Und 6. Dezember 2024 an der Hochschule stattfinden wird.

For example, the research symposium “Shifting Paradigms”, which will take place for the first time in cooperation with the ZKM, which will take place at the university on December 5 and 6, 2024 with international guests to discuss transformations in the structures of artistic and scientific research.

Weltweit entstehen immer mehr „marginale“, „laterale" oder nicht-institutionelle, selbstinitiierte, informelle und kleine private Archive, die von der Politik öffentlicher Institutionen hinterlassene Lücken schließen und marginalisierten Personen und Realitäten eine Stimme geben. Dabei handelt es sich oft nicht um Archive im eigentlichen Sinne, sondern um Indizes oder kreative Projekte, die mit Materialien und Daten auf neuartige Weise umgehen. Parallel dazu und in Verbindung damit ist eine große Anzahl von forschungsbasierten kreativen Praktiken entstanden, die mit der Aneignung und Neuformulierung archivarischer Methoden arbeiten und damit auf eine Medienrealität im beschleunigten Wandel reagieren. Das Internet und die neuen Medien fordern dazu heraus, neue Sprachen und Methoden des Archivierens zu entwickeln, aber auch eine politisch-strategische, interdisziplinäre Debatte darüber zu führen, was es wirklich bedeutet, Archivmaterial zu teilen beziehungsweise zu kommerzialisieren. Die oben genannten Phänomene: subalterne Archive, forschungsbasierte künstlerische Praktiken und das Aufkommen neuer Medien erschüttern das Archiv – sowohl Inhalt als auch formal – auf unterschiedliche Weise. Gerade der Blick auf kleine und marginale Archivierungsinitiativen lässt uns die heutigen Herausforderungen im Feld der Archive verstehen: das kontinuierliche Aufzeichnen von Ereignissen, das dynamische und autonome Verwalten von Daten, das Dokumentieren und Bewahren möglichst aller Stimmen.
Das Thema des 30-jährigen Jubiläums der HfG Karlsruhe ist "The future of“. Die Zukunft können wir nicht gestalten, ohne uns den gegenwärtigen Fragen der Archivierung des Vergangenen zu stellen. Um unsere Sicht auf die Realität, auf konventionelle westliche Formen des Wissens, der Klassifizierung und der Bewertung in Frage zu stellen, um die jüngste Vergangenheit und ihre materiellen und „immateriellen“ Veränderungen zu dokumentieren, um die vielfältigen und miteinander verknüpften Dringlichkeiten der Gegenwart anzugehen, brauchen wir sowohl das Archiv als auch seine Erschütterungen. Anstatt den Begriff des Fortschritts in Bezug auf die Zukunft allgemein und insbesondere auf die Zukunft des Archivierens zu verwenden, möchten wir die Dimension der Zukunft unter dem Aspekt des Potenzials untersuchen.

'Marginal/Lateral’ or non-institutional, self-initiated, informal and small private archives are cropping up across the globe to address gaps and offer a voice to marginalized bodies and realities. These are often not archives in the strict sense of the word, but come in the form of indexes or creative projects that reframe materials and data. Both in parallel and in conjunction, an unprecedented number of research based creative practices, which use appropriation and re-framing (by drawing from the archive or building it) as the basis for their work, and to make sense of a rapidly changing mediatic reality, have also emerged. The added context of the internet and the birth of new media have created the urgency to create a new language and method of archiving, as well for an ethical debate, across different disciplines, around what it really means to share (and often commodify) archival materials. The above fields of enquiry: subaltern archives, research based artistic practices and the emergence of new media are all shaking the archive—both in terms of content and container—in different ways. In order to re-shape our ways of keeping a dynamic record, of sorting and storing data, of preserving all voices, we cannot ignore small scale archival initiatives and attempts.
The theme of HfG’s 30 year anniversary is “the future of” and a future cannot be consciously built without facing a new set of questions around archiving present and past. In order to upend our learned assumptions about reality, about Western forms of knowledge, classification and value; in order to keep a record of the recent past and its material and immaterial transformations; in order to address the multiple, yet interconnected urgencies of the present, we need both the archive and the question, and neither of these ingredients can ever be static. Rather than adopting a notion of progress in relation to the future in general and the future of archiving more specifically, we would like to explore the idea of the future within the framework of potential.

- Die Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung und das Zentrum für Kunst und Medien in Karlsruhe wurden in den 1990er Jahren von Gründungsdirektor Heinrich Klotz als Orte einer zeitgemäßen, auf die Neuen Medien gerichteten Forschung konzipiert. Sie bieten in ihrer Kombination von Hochschule und Kulturinstitution ausgezeichnete Vorbedingungen für eine Vernetzung künstlerischer und wissenschaftlicher Ansätze, für die es in Deutschland allerdings noch veränderte Rahmenbedingungen braucht.
Ein übergreifendes postgraduales Programm sollte interdisziplinäre Expertise versammeln und nutzen, um die Beziehungen von Kunst, Theorie und Gestaltung neu auszuloten und auf diese Weise an die wegweisende Gründungsidee von HfG und ZKM anzuknüpfen. Es sollte zugleich auf einen größeren Paradigmenwechsel antworten, der sich in Kunst und Kultur wie auch im wissenschaftlichen Bereich zu vollziehen scheint und der sich einerseits in Legitimationskrisen, andererseits in neuen und kreativen Formen der Recherche und Produktion von Wissen äußert. Die HfG Karlsruhe nimmt die Diagnose zum Anlass, um hybride Formate der Forschung neu zu konzipieren und auch die Funktion wissenschaftlicher Promotionen zu befragen.
Zur Vorstellung und Diskussion dieser programmatischen Überlegungen veranstaltete die HfG in Kooperation mit dem ZKM Karlsruhe am 5. und 6. Dezember 2024 ein erstes Symposium mit internationalen Gästen, das darauf abzielt, Räume und Ideen für eine sich transformierende Forschungspraxis zu entwerfen.
In vier Panels performten und diskutierten unter anderem die französische Wissenschaftshistorikerin und -philosophin Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, der Professor für Kunstwissenschaft und Medientheorie Matthias Bruhn, die Professorin für Time Based Media und Performance Filipa César, die Szenografin und stellvertretende HfG-Rektorin Constanze Fischbeck, der ZKM-Direktor Alistair Hudson, die Künstlerin und Professorin für Code and Image Susanne Kriemann, der Professor der ADBK München Armin Linke, die Leiterin des ZKM-Hertzlabs Tina Lorenz, die Künstlerin, Kuratorin und Mitglied des Raqs Media Collectives Monica Narula, der Professor für kritische Theorie und Medienphilosophie Simon Sheikh, die Performancekünstlerin und Aktivistin Joy Mariama Smith, die Professorin für Design Füsun Türetken und die Professorin für Digitale Ästhetik Nina Zschocke mit weiteren Expertinnen und Experten, dem Publikum sowie den Angehörigen beider Häuser.

- The Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Karlsruhe and the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe (ZKM) were conceived in the 1990s by founding director Heinrich Klotz as places for contemporary research focused on new media. With their combination of university and cultural institution, they offer excellent preconditions for the networking of artistic and scientific approaches, for which, however, a different framework is still needed in Germany.
An overarching postgraduate program was intended to bring together and utilize interdisciplinary expertise in order to explore the relationships between art, theory and design in a new way, thus building on the pioneering founding idea of the HfG and ZKM. At the same time, it is intended to respond to a larger paradigm shift that seems to be taking place in art and culture as well as in the scientific field and which is expressed on the one hand in crises of legitimization and on the other in new and creative forms of research and production of knowledge. The HfG Karlsruhe was taking this diagnosis as an opportunity to redesign hybrid formats of research and also to question the function of academic doctorates.
To present and discuss these programmatic considerations, the HfG organized a first symposium with international guests in cooperation with the ZKM Karlsruhe on 5 and 6 December 2024, which aims to design spaces and ideas for a transforming research practice.
In four panels, the French historian and philosopher of science Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, the professor of art studies and media theory Matthias Bruhn, the professor of time-based media and performance Filipa César, the scenographer and deputy HfG rector Constanze Fischbeck, the ZKM director Alistair Hudson, the artist and professor of code and image Susanne Kriemann, ADBK Munich Professor Armin Linke, ZKM-Hertzlab Director Tina Lorenz, artist, curator and member of the Raqs Media Collective Monica Narula, Professor of Critical Theory and Media Philosophy Simon Sheikh, performance artist and activist Joy Mariama Smith, Professor for Design Füsun Türetken and Professor of Digital Aesthetics Nina Zschocke discussed with other experts, the audience and members of both institutions.

- Die Ausstellung "Ungeordnete Zustände" erzählt in unterschiedlichen Strängen von der Auflösung der Kleingärten an der Stuttgarter Straße in Karlsruhe. Leonie Mühlen beobachtete diese Bewegungen, dokumentierte sie und nahm selbst daran teil. Die gezeigte Sammlung ist ein Versuch den Ort zu begreifen und zu konservieren. Eben diesen Ort im Abbruch, der in seiner Unordnung und seinem Ungehorsam Refugium für viele Dinge und Wesen war.

- The exhibition "Ungeordnete Zustände" tells the story of the dissolution of the allotment gardens on Stuttgarter Straße in Karlsruhe in various strands. Leonie Mühlen observed these movements, documented them and took part in them herself. The collection on display is an attempt to understand and preserve the place. Precisely this place in demolition, which in its disorder and disobedience was a refuge for many things and beings.

Diese Gedanken sind der Beginn des Spiels Vakna, einer Gedankenwelt, die sich mit der Wahrnehmung und der Akzeptanz des unbekleideten menschlichen Körpers befasst und dadurch gesellschaftliche Einflüsse hinterfragt.
In dieser Gedankenwelt ist es dem/der Spieler/in möglich durch auffindbare Fragen und Aussagen mehr über sich selbst, die eigene Wahrnehmung, das eigene Verhalten, die eigene Moral und die eigenen rituellen Gedankengänge den menschlichen Körper betreffend herauszufinden.
Die Gedankenwelt Vakna erwacht gemeinsam mit der spielenden Person, welche vielleicht beginnt die eigene Wahrnehmung, das eigene Verhalten, die eigene Moral und die eigenen rituellen Gedankengänge den menschlichen Körper betreffend zu hinterfragen, für sich selbst und gegenüber anderen Menschen neu zu ordnen oder zu verändern.
Am Ende dieses Spiels hat jede Person für sich selbst zu entscheiden, ob das Wiedererwachen des Körpers und damit verbundene „Neu-Erleben“ der Welt ausprobiert oder gelebt werden möchte.
Auch sind die Fragen zu beantworten, wie mit der neugewonnen Akzeptanz und Wiederentdeckung umzugehen ist. Doch hat die spielende Person bei dieser Entscheidung sich nicht dem Spiel gegenüber zu verantworten, sondern sich selbst und den Mitmenschen der Gesellschaft.
Bei diesem Computerspiel handelt es sich um einen Single-Player im Bereich der Serious- und Educational-Games, das mit Tastatur und Maus gespielt werden kann.

These thoughts are the beginning of the game Vakna, a world of thoughts that deals with the perception and acceptance of the human body without clothes, thereby questioning social influences.
In this world of thoughts it is possible for the player to find out more about himself, his own perception, his own behavior, his own morality and his own ritual thoughts concerning the human body through discoverable questions and statements.
Vakna awakens together with the player. The player begins to question the own perception, the own behavior, the own morality and the own ritual thought processes concerning the human body and perhaps to rearrange or change them for themselves and for other people.
At the end of this game, each person has to decide for himself whether the body's reawakening and the „re-experiencing“ of the world would be tried out or lived.
Also, the questions to be answered are how to deal with the newly gained acceptance and rediscovery. But in this decision, the player does not have to answer to the game, but to himself and the fellow human beings of society.
This computer game is a single player in the field of serious and educational games that can be played with a keyboard and a mouse.

- Obszön, nerdy und aus Japan: Anime im Fernsehen zu schauen galt in vielen Haushalten in Deutschland als verrufen. Diese Rezeption von Anime entspricht zugleich den exotisierenden Stereotypen, die der (vorgeblich gesittete) Westen auf Japan projiziert. In ihrer Diplomarbeit nutzt Miki Feller Anime als Medium, um über anti-asiatischen Rassismus zu sprechen. Entstanden sind drei Videoarbeiten, die sie in ihrer Ausstellung „Versuche zu überschreiben“ gezeigt hat. Jedes Video erzählt eine eigene Geschichte, die in Karlsruhe spielt, unter anderem am Bahnhof, am Zoo und am Schloss. Es sind Versuche, eine vorherrschend weiße Umgebung zu beschreiben, sich dazu zu positionieren und davon zu distanzieren.
Die Videos wurden in Zusammenarbeit mit folgenden Personen realisiert und ausgestellt: „Versuche zu überschreiben“ mit Max Mandery (Dramaturgische Beratung), Bruno Jacoby (Grafik), Leia Walz (Ausstellungsgestaltung), Jaya Demmer (Textil), Johannes Thimm und Lina Determann (Rampe) / „Auf dem Weg zum Bahnhof“ mit Bruno Jacoby (Grafik) / „Prolog: Im Zoo“ mit Sophia Stadler (Storyboard, Schnitt & Fotos) / „Germania Girl – Konzert im Schloss!“ mit Max Mandery (Dramaturgische Beratung), Bruno Jacoby (Grafik), Yun-Wen Liu (Fotos & Farbkorrektur), Vanessa Bosch (Musik), Ricarda Fischer (Musik & Sounddesign), Meret Bhend und Paulina Mimberg (Farbkorrektur), Luise Peschko (Dialog Editing) sowie Nele Faust, Alejandra Janus, Melanie Berner, Rita Andrulyte, Nini Lü, Jörg Stegmann, Laura Haak und Josefine Scheu (Stimmen).
- Obszön, nerdy und aus Japan: Anime im Fernsehen zu schauen galt in vielen Haushalten in Deutschland als verrufen. Diese Rezeption von Anime entspricht zugleich den exotisierenden Stereotypen, die der (vorgeblich gesittete) Westen auf Japan projiziert. - Obscene, nerdy, and from Japan: In many German households, it was forbidden to watch anime on television. This perception of anime mirrors the exoticizing stereotypes projected onto Japan by the (allegedly civilized) West. In her diploma project, Miki Feller addresses anti-Asian racism in Germany by using anime as the medium. She created three video works and showcased them in the exhibition “Versuche zu überschreiben.” Each video tells a story set in Karlsruhe, for example, at the train station, the zoo, and the castle. These videos serve as attempts to describe a predominantly white environment, to position oneself in relation to it, and to distance oneself from it.

- Die CD-ROM thematisiert den modernen Siedlungsbau der 20er Jahre, der zwischen 1925 und 1931 im Rahmen des Neuen Bauens in Deutschland entstanden ist. Ausgangspunkt ist die 1929 in Karlsruhe-Rüppurr unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Walter Gropius und Otto Haesler errichtete Dammerstock-Siedlung. Sie wird hier zum Anlaß eines umfangreichen, interaktiv begehbaren und multimedial erschlossenen Rundgangs durch dieses wesentliche Kapitel der Architekturgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Errungenschaften und Modelle des modernen Siedlungsbaus werden nicht nur aus architektonischer und städtebaulicher Sichtweise präsentiert. Eine Reihe von Exkursionen führen darüber hinaus in das soziale, politische und kulturelle Umfeld: Aspekte wie beispielsweise der Neue Mensch und die Neue (Haus-)Frau, Architekturfotografie und Typografie, Wohnungsbaupolitik und Konstruktionsgeschichte bilden die Anknüpfungspunkte für weitgespannte thematische Bögen und inhaltliche Assoziationsketten.
