- Meine Arbeit zielt darauf ab, die Gefühle der heutigen chinesischen Jugend zu verstehen. Teure Wohnungen und stressige Jobs machen das Leben schwierig, besonders in überfüllten Städten, wo kaum Freizeit bleibt. Viele Menschen sehnen sich nach einem Ort der Entspannung, einem Zufluchtsort fernab vom Trubel des Stadtlebens.
Nehmen wir meinen Freund als Beispiel. Um innere Ruhe zu finden, hat er seine kleine Wohnung mit grünen Pflanzen gefüllt. Obwohl der Raum nicht groß ist, ist er seine kleine Oase. Inspiriert von einem koreanischen Gedicht über die Suche nach Trost inmitten der Menschenmengen, glaube ich, dass wir alle einen besonderen Ort brauchen – eine ruhige "Insel" inmitten des Trubels.
Wie finden wir diese innere Insel? Ich denke, das ist für jeden unterschiedlich. Vielleicht durch das Genießen von Kunst oder das Teilnehmen an einer ruhigen Teezeremonie. Für mich ist es das Drachenbauen. Das Drachenbauen ist eine kollektive Erfahrung, die Freude und Frieden bringt, ähnlich wie das Finden unseres eigenen ruhigen "Drachenwegs".
Mein Abschlussprojekt soll Menschen helfen, ihre eigene Friedensinsel zu entdecken. Ich habe einen Raum geschaffen, in dem Besucher diese Reise selbst erleben können. Wenn man eintritt, fühlt es sich an, als würde man meine Insel betreten. Das Design ist von der Ästhetik und Philosophie der chinesischen Song-Dynastie inspiriert, bekannt für ihre tiefe Verbindung zur Natur und Poesie.
In diesem Raum finden Sie eine Mischung aus realen und virtuellen Elementen – Pflanzen, Steine, Vögel und Wasser – all diese Elemente verschmelzen, um eine friedliche Umgebung zu schaffen.
Im Wesentlichen ist mein Kunstwerk sowohl ein Spiegelbild der menschlichen Suche nach innerem Frieden als auch eine Feier dieser Suche. Durch Kunst, Performance und den Kontakt mit der Natur hoffe ich, andere zu inspirieren, ihre eigene ruhige Insel inmitten des Lebenssturms zu finden.

- My work aims to understand the feelings of today’s Chinese youth. Expensive apartments and stressful jobs make life challenging, especially in crowded cities where there’s little time for relaxation. Many people long for a place of peace, a sanctuary far from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Take my friend, for example. To find inner calm, he filled his small apartment with green plants. Although the space isn’t large, it has become his little oasis. Inspired by a Korean poem about seeking comfort amidst the crowds, I believe we all need a special place – a quiet “island” amid the chaos.
How do we find this inner island? I think it’s different for everyone. Perhaps it’s enjoying art or participating in a quiet tea ceremony. For me, it’s kite-making. Kite-making is a collective experience that brings joy and peace, much like finding our own serene “kite path.”
My final project is meant to help people discover their own island of peace. I created a space where visitors can experience this journey themselves. When you enter, it feels as if you’re stepping onto my island. The design is inspired by the aesthetics and philosophy of the Chinese Song Dynasty, known for its deep connection to nature and poetry.
In this space, you’ll find a blend of real and virtual elements – plants, stones, birds, and water – all merging to create a peaceful environment.
Essentially, my artwork is both a reflection of the human search for inner peace and a celebration of this quest. Through art, performance, and connection with nature, I hope to inspire others to find their own quiet island amid the storm of life.

- In dieser Arbeit setze ich mich mit unterschiedlichen Geschichtsbegriffen auseinander. Dafür dienen mir die Diskussionen um die deutsche Erinnerungskultur als Einstiegspunkt. Das Ziel ist es allerdings nicht, unmittelbar in die polarisierte Debatte einzugreifen. Stattdessen richtet sich der Fokus auf das ideologische Fundament, das verschiedenen Formen, mit der eigenen Geschichte umzugehen, zugrunde liegt. Den theoretischen roten Faden bildet das Werk "After Evil" des Philosophen Robert Meister. Darin kritisiert er die Haltung, die Vergangenheit zwar als schlimm zu verurteilen, aber gleichzeitig auch als abgetrennt von der Gegenwart zu betrachten. Herausgearbeitet werden die Argumente unter anderem anhand von Filmen von Alexander Kluge und Harun Farocki.

- In this work, I examine different concepts of history. The discussions surrounding the German culture of remembrance serve as my starting point. However, the aim is not to intervene directly in the polarized debate. Instead, the focus is on the ideological foundations that underlie different ways of dealing with one's own history. The work “After Evil” by philosopher Robert Meister forms the theoretical leitmotif. In it, he criticizes the position of condemning the past as evil, but treating it at the same as something that is separated from the present. The arguments are elaborated on the basis of films by Alexander Kluge and Harun Farocki, among others.

- „Der Fall Marcel Broodthaers lädt den Rezipienten dazu ein, sich mit dessen Vorläufern auseinanderzusetzen. Nicht etwa, weil dort Geheimnisse aufzudecken wären – im Gegenteil, die broodthaers’schen Galionsfiguren sind in seinem Werk alle namentlich präsentiert –, sondern eher auf Grund der Tatsache, da er es wie kaum ein anderer verstanden hat, sich bestimmter Vorbilder zu bedienen, sprich, sich Teilaspekte aus deren Werken anzueignen und die darin enthaltenen Kerngedanken eigens fortzuschreiben. Dies geschieht auf eine Art und Weise, die es vermag, Hommage und Kritik zu vereinen.”

- „How do imaginaries claim normativity? A society can only function if enough people envision the same imaginary, says Castoriadis. I claim, that new imaginaries need to be exercised, if they are to claim normative power. This paper investigates a homogenization process of a social imaginary: In the 1966 German civil defense exercise Fallex 66, 33 members of the West German parliament simulated the at this point intensely disputed Emergency Laws. This paper argues that the fusion of fictional and real elements in the exercised scenario, combined with a bodily and affective immersion in a bunker setting had the power to shift a social imaginary. By presenting the Emergency Laws in a conservative patriarchal imaginary landscape, the exercise induces a normative shift in the social perception of the Laws. This paper sheds a leftist light on the struggle, highlighting the political bias of the exercise, as well as giving a new vocabulary to the left critique of that time. With a unique conceptual set-up, this paper investigates the imaginaries transported by and the means of their production in the civil defense exercise. Hereby, I suggest a methodical set for the analysis of social imaginaries at the cutting surface of aesthetics, affect theory, contemporary history, and social philosophy.”

- "Disparate Precedents of Display" untersucht die Art und Weise, wie der Raum auf die Besucher wirkt, und stellt Ausstellungsdesign als eine genuin politische Praxis dar, die auf der Vergangenheit aufbaut und von ihr erbt - von vergangenen Ausstellungen, einflussreichen Ausstellungsgestalter*innen und Konventionen der Präsentation, die in unterschiedlichen politischen Systemen wurzeln.
Zwei Ausstellungen, die vom deutschen Staat in Auftrag gegeben wurden, dienen als Fallstudien. "Gebt mir vier Jahre Zeit" war eine nationalsozialistische Propagandaschau, die 1937 in Berlin stattfand. Sie feierte die Umgestaltung aller Bereiche der Gesellschaft unter der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft seit der Umsetzung von Adolf Hitlers Vierjahresplan. Einundzwanzig Jahre später beauftragte die Bundesrepublik Deutschland denselben Architekten mit der Gestaltung des deutschen Pavillons auf der Expo '58 in Brüssel. Auf der Weltausstellung hatte der junge Nachfolgestaat zum ersten Mal die Gelegenheit, die kulturellen, wirtschaftlichen und politischen Parameter des nunmehr demokratischen Deutschlands auf internationaler Ebene zu präsentieren. Beide Ausstellungen lassen sich als Repräsentationen staatlicher Macht und politischer Narrative beschreiben - die eine im Namen des Krieges, die andere im Namen der Humanität. Maßgeblich beteiligt an beiden Ausstellungen war Egon Eiermann als Ausstellungsarchitekt.

- "Disparate Precedents of Display" looks at the way space affects visitors, exposing exhibition design as a genuinely political practice, building on and inheriting from the past – from past exhibitions, influential exhibition designers and conventions of display rooted in disparate political systems.
Two exhibitions, commissioned by the German state, serve as case studies. “Gebt mir vier Jahre Zeit” was a National Socialist propaganda show staged in Berlin in 1937. It celebrated the transformation of all sectors of society under National Socialist rule since the implementation of Adolf Hitlers 4-year-plan. Twenty-one years later, the Federal Republic of Germany commissioned the same architect to design the German Pavilion at the Expo ‘58 in Brussels. At the World‘s Fair the young successor state had its first opportunity to present the cultural, economic and political parameters of a now democratic Germany on an international scale. Both shows can be described as representations of state power and political narratives – one in the name of war and one in the name of humanity. Significant contributor to both exhibitions was Egon Eiermann in his role as exhibition architect.

- Es ist ein Akt der Emanzipation. Das mit dem Mühlheimer Dramatikerpreis gekrönte Stück erzählt in einem rhythmisch tobenden Redestrom davon, wie sich die Tochter polnischer Einwanderer und ihre „chosen sisters“ von der Last des Migrationsnarrativs befreien und zu dem werden, was sie eigentlich immer waren: Göttinnen.
Das Stück “Tragödienbastard” von Ewe Benbenek wurde im Wintersemester 2021/2022 im Rahmen des Seminars ‘Das neue Stück’ von Studierenden technisch und künstlerisch erarbeitet und in eine knapp zweistündige szenische Lesung umgesetzt. Das Projekt wurde von Constanze Fischbeck, Anna Haas und Eivind Haugland betreut sowie von Sandra Blatterer, welche in einem einwöchigen Lichtworkshop spannende Impulse zur Erarbeitung des Licht- und Bühnenkonzepts gab.
Im Anschluss an die szenische Lesung findet ein Nachgespräch mit der Autorin Ewe Benbenek und den Mitwirkenden statt.

The play, which was awarded the Mühlheim Dramatist Prize, tells the story of how the daughter of Polish immigrants and her "chosen sisters" free themselves from the burden of the migration narrative in a rhythmically raging stream of speech and become what they actually always were: Goddesses.
The play "Tragödienbastard" by Ewe Benbenek was technically and artistically developed by students in the winter semester 2021/2022 as part of the seminar 'Das neue Stück' and transformed into a staged reading lasting almost two hours. The project was supervised by Constanze Fischbeck, Anna Haas and Eivind Haugland as well as Sandra Blatterer, who gave exciting impulses for the development of the lighting and stage concept in a one-week lighting workshop.
The staged reading will be followed by a discussion with the author Ewe Benbenek and the participants.

- Frische Fische kann Fischer Fritz nicht mehr fischen. Nicht erst seit seinem Schlaganfall. Sein Sohn Franz ist kein Fischer geworden, sondern Frisör in der Großstadt. Um den Vater zu versorgen hat er eine ausländische Pflegekraft engagiert. Ein Sprechtheater nennt die Autorin Raphaela Bardutzky ihr Stück, das bei den Autor*innentheatertage 2022 am Deutschen Theater in Berlin ausgezeichnet wurde. Sprachlich virtuos, tragisch-komisch und spielerisch leicht erzählt sie von Heimat und Fremde, Sehnsucht und Einsamkeit, Stadt und Land, Alter und Jugend. Im Anschluss findet ein Gespräch mit der Autorin Raphaela Bardutzky statt.

- Fisherman Fritz can no longer catch fresh fish. Not just since his stroke. His son Franz has not become a fisherman, but a hairdresser in the big city. He has hired a foreign carer to look after his father. Author Raphaela Bardutzky calls her play, which won an award at the Autor*innentheatertage 2022 at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, spoken theater. With virtuoso language, tragic-comic and playful lightness, it tells of home and foreignness, longing and loneliness, city and country, age and youth. This will be followed by a discussion with the author Raphaela Bardutzky.

- In meinem Diplom „Doch nochmal was mit Holz“ werden ausschließlich Holzreste von abgestorbenen Bäumen und solchen, die industriell keine Verwendung bekommen können transformiert. Äste werden jetzt zu ziegelartigen Holzsteinen, andere Teile des Baumes zu Natursteinen oder Geröll.
Ergänzt wird diese Holzwelt durch übergroße Nägel aus hochgebranntem Ton, die geschmiedete Metallnägel, verrostet und neu, nachahmen.

- In my diploma “Doch nochmal was mit Holz”, only wood residues from dead trees and those that cannot be used industrially are transformed. Branches now become brick-like wooden stones, other parts of the tree become natural stones or boulders.
This world of wood is complemented by oversized nails made of high-fired clay that imitate forged metal nails, rusted and new.

„Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem scheinbaren Widerspruch zwischen musealer und religiöser Bildbetrachtung und der Frage, welche Kriterien diesen zu Grunde liegen. Ausgangspunkt für diese Fragestellung stellt eine Debatte dar, die in Russland geführt wird. Dort wurden sämtliche Kirchen nach der Oktoberrevolution 1917 enteignet. Der Besitz ging an den Staat über, was zur Folge hatte, dass viele der ursprünglich sakralen Objekte und Bauten zerstört, umgenutzt oder an Museen übergeben wurden. Nach dem Ende des Kommunismus in Russland wurde die Frage nach der Rückgabe dieser Besitztümer häufig gestellt. Aber erst 2007 kam es zu konkreten Planungen zu einem Gesetz zur „Übergabe des in staatlichem oder städtischem Besitz befindlichen Eigentums religiöser Zweckbestimmung an die religiösen Organisationen“ von Seiten des Staates. Dieses Gesetz sollte den Kirchen des Landes eine rechtliche Grundlage für Restitutionsforderungen bieten. Zeitgleich fühlen sich russische Museen durch das Gesetz in ihrem Bestand und in ihrer Existenz bedroht.”
„Die Frage, wem man in einer solchen Auseinandersetzung Recht geben sollte, ist durchaus schwierig: den Museen, die Kulturgüter (wie Ikonen) schützen, oder den Kirchen, für die Bilder Instrumentarien darstellen, die eine aktive Rolle im kirchlichen Ritus spielen und auch genau für diesen Zweck hergestellt wurden? Es geht also um die Frage, ob man sakrale Objekte, Kultwerke also, als Kunstwerke behandeln darf beziehungsweise wie dies zu rechtfertigen ist. Um diese Frage zu klären, ist es nötig den grundsätzlichen Umgang mit Bildern beider Institutionen zu klären. Hieraus ergeben sich auch Fragestellungen für die westlichen Museen und ihren bisherigen Gültigkeitsanspruch.”

- ‘This work deals with the apparent contradiction between museum and religious image viewing and the question of which criteria underlie these. The starting point for this question is a debate that is taking place in Russia. There, all churches were expropriated after the October Revolution in 1917. The property was transferred to the state, which meant that many of the originally sacred objects and buildings were destroyed, repurposed or handed over to museums. After the end of communism in Russia, the question of returning these possessions was frequently raised. However, it was not until 2007 that concrete plans were made by the state for a law on the ‘transfer of state-owned or municipally-owned religious property to religious organisations’. This law was intended to provide the country's churches with a legal basis for restitution claims. At the same time, Russian museums feel that their existence is threatened by the law.’

In order to clarify this question, it is necessary to clarify the fundamental handling of images in both institutions. This also raises questions for Western museums and their current claim to validity.’

- Die Rauminstallation “Elastic Kin” zeigt eine Gruppe von Textilobjekten - Gefüge -, die aus weggeworfenen Kleidungsstücken bestehen. Sie existieren sowohl als Individuen als auch als Gruppe. Die Kleidungsstücke, die in den Straße von K. gefunden wurden und von Anderen in anderen Kontext hergestellt worden sind, kehren ihren ursprünglichen Zweck um, indem sie zu eigenen Körpern werden, die unabhängig von menschlichen Körpern sind. Jede Oberfläche ist wie eine geheime Landkarte, die Spuren anonymer Hände enthält, die an den Textilien gearbeitet haben.
Der Sound der Installation ist ein Echo - fast verschwundener, kollektiver Erinnerungen an vergangene Momente und Orte.
“Elastic Kin” versucht, eine weit verbreitete Verwandtschaft darzustellen, die durch unsichtbare, lose und elastische Fäden imaginiert wird, die ein internationales System von Lieferketten, Arbeiter*Innen und Konsument*Innen, Trendprognosen und unvorhersehbarem Zeitgeist, Massenproduktion und meditativer Handarbeit abbilden. Welche Spuren dieser Kontexte enthalten die Kleidungsstücke?
Das Video zeigt eine performative Intervention im öffentlichen Raum. Es zeigt die Gefüge, die eine neue Existenz außerhalb ihrer Produktions- und Vermarktungskontexte führen: Sie kehren in ein Einkaufszentrum zurück, animiert von den Menschen, die sie einst bekleideten.

Assembled from used garments, found in the streets of K., produced by others in other contexts, they invert their original purpose by becoming bodies of their own, no longer dependent on being activated by a human body. The surface of every Gefüge is like a secret map, containing traces of anonymous hands working on them.
The sound in the installation is an echo of almost vanished collective memories of past moments and places. “Elastic Kin” attempts to depict a widespread kinship, that is imagined through invisible, loose and elastic threads mapping an international system of supply chains, workers and consumers, trend forecast and unpredictable zeitgeist, mass production and meditative handcraft. Which traces of these contexts do the garments contain?
The video shows a performative intervention in pub- lic space. It shows the Gefüge leading a new existence outside their production and marketing contexts: They return to the shopping mall, animated by the people, they once used to dress.

- „Emil” ist ein Diplomprojekt, das sich mit der Rolle der Typografie im Umgang mit Erinnerung, Verdrängung und historischen Brüchen auseinandersetzt. Im Zentrum steht das Revival der Schrift „Bernhard Antiqua”, die von Lucian Bernhard (geb. Emil Kahn), einem jüdischen Designer, entworfen wurde. Dessen Werk wurde von politischen und ideologischen Kräften auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks unterdrückt, umgedeutet und schließlich ausgelöscht.
Lucian Bernhard, geboren 1883 als Emil Kahn in Cannstatt, stammte aus einer jüdischen Familie und blieb trotz früher Taufe gesellschaftlich ausgegrenzt. Mit siebzehn zog er nach Berlin, wo er sich umbenannte und zu einer prägenden Figur im deutschen Grafikdesign wurde. Seine Schriften wurden zunächst stark genutzt, auch von den Nationalsozialisten, später jedoch sowohl in Deutschland als „jüdisch“ verboten als auch in den USA als „Nazi-Schriften“ boykottiert. In diesem Spannungsfeld wurde die Bernhard Antiqua fast vollständig aus dem kulturellen Gedächtnis verdrängt.
Für Julian Jaffé, Nachfahre einer im Nationalsozialismus ins Exil gezwungenen jüdischen Familie, ist diese Auseinandersetzung von persönlicher Bedeutung. „Emil” ist nicht nur eine typografische Wiederbelebung, sondern auch ein Akt des Erinnerns: an eine verdrängte Identität, eine verschwundene Stimme und die Systeme, die zu ihrem Verschwinden beigetragen haben.
„Emil” soll in Zukunft als langfristiges Projekt weitergeführt werden. Geplant ist der Aufbau einer digitalen Plattform, die Schrift-Revivals, neue Entwürfe und kritische Texte zusammenführt. So entsteht ein lebendiges Archiv, in dem Gestaltung, historische Reflexion und kulturelles Gedächtnis miteinander in Dialog treten.

- ‘Emil’ is a diploma project that explores the role of typography in dealing with memory, repression and historical ruptures. It centres on the revival of the ‘Bernhard Antiqua’ typeface, which was designed by Lucian Bernhard (born Emil Kahn), a Jewish designer. His work was suppressed, reinterpreted and ultimately erased by political and ideological forces on both sides of the Atlantic.
Lucian Bernhard, born Emil Kahn in Cannstatt in 1883, came from a Jewish family and remained socially marginalised despite being baptised at an early age. At the age of seventeen, he moved to Berlin, where he renamed himself and became a formative figure in German graphic design. His fonts were initially widely used, including by the National Socialists, but were later banned in Germany as ‘Jewish’ and boycotted in the USA as ‘Nazi type’. In this field of tension, Bernhard Antiqua was almost completely suppressed from cultural memory.
For Julian Jaffé, descendant of a Jewish family forced into exile under National Socialism, this confrontation is of personal significance. ‘Emil’ is not only a typographic revival, but also an act of remembrance: of a repressed identity, a vanished voice and the systems that contributed to its disappearance.
‘Emil’ is to be continued as a long-term project in the future. The plan is to create a digital platform that brings together type revivals, new designs and critical texts. This will create a living archive in which design, historical reflection and cultural memory enter into dialogue with each other.
