- „Paris – New York, zwei Städte, deren Namen eine Flut von Begriffen, Bildern und Assoziationen in unserem Inneren auslösen. Zwei Weltstädte, die unterschiedlicher kaum sein können. Die eine, die verträumte Stadt an der Seine, gilt als das Mekka der Liebenden, ist der Inbegriff für Kunst und Kultur, war Sitz von Königen und Kaisern wir Ludwig XIV. oder Napoleon und blutiger Schauplatz zahlreicher Revolutionen. Sie ist geprägt von einer mehr als zweitausendjährigen Geschichte und verkörpert schlichtweg das, was man heute mit französischer Lebensart verbindet. Die andere, 'die wunderbare Katastrophe', wie Le Corbusier sie nennt, besticht durch ihre schier unerschöpfliche Energie und Wandlungsfähigkeit, ihre spektakuläre Hochhausarchitektur und ihre multikulturelle Gesellschaft. - Vivian Reuter explores in her project the perhaps uncomfortable reality that we, primarily in the global north, are burning trash as a form of energy.
Known as “waste-to-energy”, the process of burning municipal waste to generate energy has grown rapidly across Europe as a solution to our waste problem. The incineration of trash in countries like the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany is often portrayed through technological lenses as the exact opposite of its chaotic waste input: orderly, efficient, and clean. Incineration plants designed by prestigious names like Bjarke Ingels paint the image that this energy source is rightfully part of our new energy transition.
Perhaps unusually, waste incineration is largely considered a form of renewable energy, helping nations achieve climate targets. This should raise some eyebrows given that within the incinerated trash are large amounts of petroleum based products, such as plastics. Notably, about 1.1 tonnes of CO2 is emitted per tonne of trash; this is nearly 70M tonnes of CO2 emitted in the EU per year.
Reuter chooses to draw attention to this contentious space through the exploration of the iconic plastic outdoor chair.
By the mutilation of the iconic, playful plastic forms using fire, Reuter creates pieces that are at once attractive and repulsive— the smell and look of burnt plastic inherently makes us think of pollution and even the developing world where images of burning trash abound, such as Ghana’s Agbogbloshie dump. Reuters works seems to challenge waste incineration as having an element of absurdity by transforming the chairs into altogether different objects such as candles, and through the use of a domestic object, reminds us of the cost of our daily activities that are saturated in systems of consumption.

- Birch Chair follows a holistic approach and combines modern and traditional birch processing methods. Seats are molded and glued in the same way as the main use of birch wood today in veneer panels. All legs are milled.
Wood joints are clued with birch pitch created from the bark by thermal energy of the smaller knots.
The resulting black outlines on the iconic round joints are an analogy to a traditional way of working with fire as a tool.

- Der Künstler und Grafiker Wolfgang Schmidt (* 24. Juli 1929; † 8. März 1995) begann 1972 mit der Gestaltung seines individuellen Zeichensystems: Den Lebenszeichen. Bis 1979 waren von den geplanten 893 Zeichen 262 fertiggestellt, in Kombination miteinander ergeben sich aus ihnen über 394 Variationen. [...] Die Ausstellung "all the things you are." geht diesem Katalog nach und zeigt neben originalen Drucken, auch eine Auswahl an Manuskripten und Plänen. [...] Die Exponate in der Ausstellung werden durch neu entstandene Arbeiten ergänzt, welche die durch Schmidts Zeichensystem aufgeworfenen Fragen nach Identität, Emotion und Kommunikation aufgreifen.

- Tides are subject to the cycle of the sun, earth and moon. They are the movement of the water masses of the ocean, which appears on the coasts as a periodic rise and fall of the sea level. [...] Tides as a metaphor for existence outline the continuous balancing of coming and going, attracting and repelling, showing and withdrawing. [...] "Tide" translates this understanding of the tides into a continuous, non-linear movement in the exhibition space.

- Was kommt nach dem Feuer? Für das menschliche Auge unsichtbar, ist Harz in allen Hölzern enthalten. Durch einen sauerstofffreien Erhitzungsprozess wird das Harz als eine dickere Substanz extrahiert, die einem schwarzen Kunststoff ähnelt, der als Teer oder Pech bekannt ist. Seine Verwendung reicht viele Jahrtausende zurück und dient verschiedenen Zwecken, von
medizinischen Anwendungen bis hin zur Abdichtung und sogar
als Klebstoff.
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Birke als einheimischen Baum sollten die historischen Ursprünge der Teergewinnung aufgedeckt werden. Dazu musste ich die mühsame, langsame und meditative Erfahrung der Birkenpechgewinnung nachempfinden, d. h. im Wald nach Birkenbäumen suchen, die Rinde ernten, einen Teerofen bauen und immer wieder versuchen, den Teer zu gewinnen. Die Herausforderungen und Misserfolge wurden zu einem wesentlichen Bestandteil des Erfolgs meines performativen Ansatzes für diese Erfahrung.

- What comes after fire?
Invisible to the everyday eye, resin is delicately infused in all woods. Through an oxygen-free heating process, the resin is extracted as a thicker substance, resembling black plastic known as tar or pitch. Its use dates back many millennia, serving various purposes, from
medicinal applications to waterproofing and even
as an adhesive.
With a specific focus on birch as a native tree, the aim was to uncover the historical origins behind tar extraction. The process involved replicating the laborious, slow, and meditative experience of birch pitch production, which included seeking out a secluded patch of birch trees, harvesting the birch, constructing a tar-making oven, and making repeated attempts to extract the tar.
At times, I succeeded only in obtaining a few drops,
while at other times, I managed to fill a jar. The challenges and failures became integral to the success of my performative approach to this experience.

- WWWE ist eine 40-minütige, performative Wrestlingshow im öffentlichen Raum. Im Mittelpunkt stehen zwei Frauen, deren Crew, eine Band* und eine Moderatorin, die sich gemeinsam mit dem Publikum im Wrestling ausprobieren und die gesellschaftliche Tabuisierung von wütenden Frauen im Ring verhandeln. Wie im Schaukampf üblich, sind die Handlungsabläufe teilweise improvisiert und werden mit Showelementen und Storylines angereichert.

The focus is on two women, their crew, a band* and a presenter who try their hand at wrestling together with the audience and negotiate the social taboo of angry women in the ring. - Mit einer Kombination aus praktischen, experimentellen und forschungsbasierten Ansätzen und einem Fokus auf Materialien untersuchten Studierende und Lehrende im Seminar Afterfire unsere Beziehung zum Feuer im Laufe der Geschichte und im Vergleich zu heute. Geleitet von den Gastprofessoren Paco Boekelmann und Kevin Rouff von Studio Thusthat fand das Seminar im Wintersemester 2022/23 an der HfG Karlsruhe statt.
In einer Zeit von Kriegen, knappen Energieressourcen und der Klimakrise konzentrierte sich das Afterfire Seminar auf unsere besondere Übergangszeit, in der wir uns (theoretisch) von fossilen Brennstoffen entfernen und nach neuen Feuerquellen suchen. In Vorträgen, Gastvorträgen, Ortsbesichtigungen, Workshops und Einzelarbeiten untersuchten Studierende und Lehrende die Nutzung von Feuer und verschiedenen Brennstoffen im Laufe der Jahrhunderte und konzentrierten sich dabei auf das, was nach dem Feuer übrig bleibt - die Asche.
Nach einem Besuch des Kohlekraftwerks im Karlsruher Rheinhafen organisierte Studio Thusthat einen Workshop, um den Vorläufer der Steinkohle zu erforschen: die Holzkohle. Die Studierenden schufen Werkstücke, hauptsächlich aus Holz, und bauten einen Ofen, in dem alle Objekte am letzten Tag des Workshops ohne Sauerstoff gebrannt wurden, so dass sie zu Holzkohle wurden.
Der zweite Workshop konzentrierte sich auf die drei "neuen" wichtigsten alternativen Brennstoffsektoren: den Bereich der holzigen Biomasse, den Bereich der landwirtschaftlichen Nebenprodukte und den Bereich der Energiegewinnung aus Abfällen. Zwei Tage lang analysierten die Studierenden in Gruppenarbeit die repräsentativen Brennstoffe Holz, Stroh und Siedlungsabfälle im Hinblick auf die vielen Nuancen, die für und gegen ihre Nutzung als Energiequelle sprechen.
Neben und in Verbindung mit den Workshops wurden im Laufe des Semesters individuelle studentische Projekte entwickelt, die auf den Recherchen von Studio Thusthat aufbauten und eigene Prozesse, Phänomene, Effekte oder Zusammenhänge von Feuer theoretisch und praktisch erarbeiteten.
Am Ende des Semesters wurden alle studentischen Projekte in einer Ausstellung im Lichthof der HfG Karlsruhe präsentiert, wo die Projekte der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert wurden. Eine Auswahl der Projekte, an denen die Studierenden über das Seminar hinaus weitergearbeitet haben, wurde beim Rundgang und bei der Karlsruher Museumsnacht 2023 ausgestellt.

- With a combination of practical, experimental and research-based approaches and a focus on materials, students and teachers in the Afterfire seminar examined our relationship to fire throughout history and in comparison to today. Led by guest professors Paco Boekelmann and Kevin Rouff from Studio Thusthat, the seminar took place in the winter semester 2022/23 at the HfG Karlsruhe.
In a time of wars, scarce energy resources and climate crisis, the Afterfire Seminar focused on our particular transitional period in which we are (theoretically) moving away from fossil fuels and looking for new sources of fire. Through lectures, guest talks, site visits, workshops and individual work, students and teachers explored the use of fire and different fuels over the centuries, focussing on what remains after the fire - the ash.
Following a visit to the coal-fired power station in Karlsruhe's Rheinhafen, Studio Thusthat organised a workshop to explore the precursor to hard coal: charcoal. The students created workpieces, mainly out of wood, and built a kiln in which all the objects were burnt without oxygen on the last day of the workshop, turning them into charcoal.
The second workshop focussed on the three "new" main alternative fuel sectors: the woody biomass sector, the agricultural by-products sector and the waste-to-energy sector. For two days, students worked in groups to analyse the representative fuels wood, straw and municipal waste with regard to the many nuances that speak both for and against their use as an energy source.
Alongside and in conjunction with the workshops, individual student projects were developed throughout the semester, which built on Studio Thusthat's research and worked out their own processes, phenomena, effects or connections of fire in theory and practice.
At the end of the semester, all student projects were presented in an exhibition in the Lichthof of the HfG Karlsruhe, where the projects were explained and shown to the public. A selection of the projects on which students continued to work beyond the seminar was exhibited during the Rundgang and at the Karlsruhe Museumsnacht 2023.

- Von der Geschichte des Feuers bis zur Untersuchung seiner Bedeutung für die menschliche Gesellschaft habe ich eine Verbindung zwischen Feuer und Farben entdeckt: Metalle erzeugen unter bestimmten Verbrennungsbedingungen verschiedene Farben, die auch als wichtige Farbstoffe in der Glasurenherstellung dienen. Ich habe Zusammenhänge zwischen Metallen, Flammen, Farben und Glasuren gefunden, die auf den ersten Blick unzusammenhängend erscheinen, aber sich tatsächlich gegenseitig ergänzen. Mein Fokus liegt nun auf dem Stahlwerk in Kehl. Ich bin neugierig auf die verschiedenen Prozesse, die bei der Stahlerzeugung verwendet werden, sowie auf die entstehenden industriellen Nebenprodukte. Während meiner Recherchen stieß ich auf ein Nebenprodukt namens Schrott, das während des Walzprozesses entsteht, wenn die Oberfläche des Stahls mit Luft reagiert und hauptsächlich aus Eisenoxid besteht. Es ist ungiftig, aber aufgrund des niedrigen Eisengehalts sind die Recyclingkosten zu hoch, weshalb es oft von Stahlwerken zu einem niedrigen Preis verkauft und als Material für Straßenbau verwendet wird. Ich habe Kontakt mit dem Stahlwerk aufgenommen und etwa zehn Kilogramm dieses Materials aus Kehl erhalten. Ich habe darüber nachgedacht, wie ich dieses industrielle Nebenprodukt wieder verwenden kann, indem ich es durch Design-Upcycling verbessere, anstatt es abzubauen. Basierend auf meiner früheren Forschung zeigt Eisen als relativ aktives Metall in oxidativen und reduktiven Reaktionen bei unterschiedlichen Temperaturen eine reiche Farbpalette. Daher ist Eisen ein wichtiger Farbstoff in der Glasurenherstellung. Ich habe begonnen, das Schrott als Rohstoff in verschiedenen Mischungsverhältnissen mit anderen chemischen Elementen für Glasurexperimente zu verwenden, in der Hoffnung, die Möglichkeit zu sehen, Industrieabfälle in einer anderen Branche als Rohstoffe wiederzuverwenden. Das Ergebnis war überraschend; selbst auf den Testmustern zeigte das Schrott als Farbstoff Potenzial. Wenn die Forschung fortgesetzt wird, ist es möglich, neue Glasuren unter Verwendung verschiedener Industrieabfälle zu entwickeln. Durch diese Forschung sehe ich die Möglichkeiten des Designs in der modernen Industrie. Wenn Menschen mit Ressourcenknappheit und Umweltkrise konfrontiert sind, ist es dringend erforderlich, die Produktionsschritte, die sich aufgrund der industriellen Revolution einst unabhängig voneinander entwickelt haben, neu zu überdenken und die Verbindungen zwischen ihnen wiederherzustellen. Dies ist eine wichtige Fragestellung, über die zeitgenössisches Design nachdenken sollte.

- From understanding the history of fire to researching its significance for human society, I discovered a connection between fire and colors: under specific combustion conditions, metallic elements produce various colors, which also serve as important colorants in glaze production. I found correlations between metals, flames, colors, and glazes, seemingly unrelated clues that actually complement each other. My focus now lies on the steelworks located in Kehl. I am curious about the various processes used in steelmaking and the resulting industrial by-products. During my research, I came across an industrial by-product called slag, which is formed during the steel rolling process when the surface of the steel reacts with air, primarily consisting of iron oxide. It is non-toxic, but due to its low iron content, the cost of recycling is too high, so it is often sold by steelworks at a low price and used as material for road embankments. I contacted the steelworks and obtained nearly ten kilograms of this material from Kehl. I began to consider how to reuse this industrial by-product by designing upgrades rather than downgrading it for disposal. Based on my previous research, iron, as a relatively active metal, exhibits a rich range of colors in oxidative and reductive reactions at different temperatures, making it an important colorant in glaze formulation. I started experimenting with the slag as a raw material in glaze formulations, mixing it with other chemical elements in different proportions, hoping to explore the possibility of industrial waste redevelopment in another industry. The result was surprising; even on the test samples, the slag showed potential as a colorant. If the research continues, it is possible to develop new glazes using various industrial wastes. Through this research, I see the possibilities of design in modern industry. When faced with resource depletion and environmental crisis, it is imperative to rethink the production steps that once developed independently due to the industrial revolution and to rediscover the connections between them. This is a critical issue for contemporary design to consider.
