Gideon Bachmann commissions Marie to inventory his possessions. A collection of dozens of boxes, neatly filled with items, photographs, love letters, and film footage. An enormous trove that holds the countless stories of a man who can be described as a witness of the 20th century. Trial and Error tells of the encounter between the aging globetrotter, who wrestles with death, and the film student searching for stories. His biography and the complex, albeit sketchy, character study are at the center of the narrative. In this way, the portrait opens a discourse on life and transience and illuminates the ambivalent relationship between director and protagonist.

Das Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe hat 1997 in der ehemaligen Halle der Industriewerke Karlsruhe–Augsburg, der einst größten Waffen- und Munitionsfabrik der Welt, seine Unterkunft gefunden. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurden hier, wie andernorts in Deutschland, ausländische Arbeiter und Arbeiterinnen, die meist zwangsrekrutiert wurden, unter unmenschlichen Bedingungen zur Fertigung eingesetzt.
VHS-Video, Dokumentarfilm: Der Film behandelt die Zwangsarbeit in den Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken in Karlsruhe. Es werden polnische und niederländische Zeitzeugen interviewt.

During World War II, foreign workers, who were mostly conscripted, were employed under inhumane conditions for production, as was the case in other parts of Germany.
VHS Video, Documentary: The film addresses forced labor in the weapons and munitions factories in Karlsruhe. Polish and Dutch eyewitnesses are interviewed.

Das zurückgezogene Leben der alleinstehenden Monika gerät aus dem Takt, als sie, ohne es zu merken, den Lieferanten Bruno in ihrer Wohnung einschließt. Zunächst unfreiwillig gefangen, arrangiert sich der unbemerkte Mitbewohner allmählich mit seiner unbequemen Situation...
Ein sympathischer, humorvoller Puppentrickfilm, der Slapstick-Elemente mit schwarzem Humor vereint. Statt Dialogen nutzt der Film korrespondierende Alltagsgeräusche der beiden Figuren als Ersatz für die nicht stattfindende Kommunikation.

Synopsis
The secluded life of single Monika is thrown off balance when she accidentally locks deliveryman Bruno in her apartment. Initially trapped against his will, the unnoticed roommate gradually comes to terms with his uncomfortable situation…
A charming, humorous stop-motion film that combines slapstick elements with dark humor. Instead of dialogue, the film uses corresponding everyday sounds of the two characters as a substitute for the communication that does not take place.

Three buildings in former Yugoslavia are the protagonists in this story of war, destruction, collective identity and cultural heritage. These three buildings in Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina are examples of three different ways societies deal with the structural remnants of an armed conflict.
How are the new nation-states dealing with their heritage? What can these practices say about their collective culture of remembrance? How do the structures tell the legacy and building of new nation states, and how do architectural structure and social narrative influence each other?

Suchen Sie das perfekte Baby? Hier wird Ihr Wunsch erfüllt! In einer Fabrik werden Kinder nach Maß gefertigt.
Die Videoproduktion Birthmark nutzt Stop-Motion-Animation und Claymation-Techniken, um Szenen aus einer Fabrik darzustellen, in der Kinder produziert werden. Die Fabrik dient als Metapher für das unersättliche Verlangen der Menschheit nach Perfektion und Prestige.
Dieses Werk hebt das extreme Verlangen nach dem "perfekten Kind" hervor, das als vorzeigbares und prestigeträchtiges Objekt angesehen wird, oft in sozialen Medien und im echten Leben präsentiert. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Aussehen—darauf, was schön aussieht und präsentiert werden kann—während der Wert und die Persönlichkeit des Individuums dabei kaum eine Rolle zu spielen scheinen.
Meine Arbeit untersucht die Fließbandproduktion von Babys, die wie Artikel in einem Online-Shop bestellt und angepasst werden.

Are you looking for the perfect baby? Here, your wish will be fulfilled! In a factory, children are made to measure.
The video work Birthmark utilizes Stop Motion Animation and Claymation techniques to depict scenes from a factory where children are produced. The factory serves as a metaphor for humanity's insatiable desire for perfection and prestige.
This work highlights the extreme desire for the "perfect child" as a presentable and prestigious object, often showcased in social media and real life. The emphasis is placed on appearances—what looks pretty and can be presented—while the value and personality of the individual seem to matter little.
My work explores the assembly line production of babies, ordered and customized like items in an online shop.

Synopsis
Auf Bruch erzählt die Geschichte von 33 jungen Menschen, die von einer anderen Reise träumten, aber einen Weg einschlugen, der nie sein Ziel erreichte. Indem der Film ihrem Pfad folgt – im Schatten ihrer Geister und Erinnerungen – wird er zu einer Auseinandersetzung damit, wie und was nach einer unbetrauerten Katastrophe erzählt werden kann. Eine Reise parallel zu ihrer, ein Tagtraum mitten in einer Konfliktzone, in der die Landschaft Machtstrukturen dekonstruiert.
Geschichte
Im Sommer 2015 organisierte eine Gruppe junger Menschen aus der Westtürkei eine humanitäre Hilfskampagne, um den Wiederaufbau der Stadt Kobanê im Norden Syriens zu unterstützen, die nach der Verteidigung gegen den IS schwer beschädigt war. Ihre Reise war mehr als eine Hilfsaktion – sie war eine symbolische Brücke zwischen der türkischen und der kurdischen Gesellschaft während noch andauernder Friedensverhandlungen.
Doch ihre Reise endete in der Grenzstadt Suruç, gegenüber von Kobanê, wo sich ein IS-Attentäter in die Luft sprengte und 33 von ihnen tötete.
Das Massaker von Suruç war nicht nur ein Angriff auf die Brüderlichkeit zwischen zwei Völkern, sondern auch ein Vorbote des blutigen Aufruhrs, der in der Türkei folgen sollte.
Auf Bruch konzentriert sich nicht auf dieses einzelne Ereignis, sondern auf die moralischen Beweggründe und die Motivation der jungen Menschen, diese Reise anzutreten. Was brachte sie dazu, ihre gewohnte Umgebung zu verlassen? Wie entschieden sie sich, zu gehen?
Das Projekt wurde über vier Jahre hinweg als Teil einer groß angelegten Oral-History- und visuellen Erinnerungsinitiative entwickelt. Es basiert auf Gesprächen mit Überlebenden und Zeugen des Massakers sowie mit den Angehörigen der Opfer. Über 150 Interviews wurden von einer kleinen, selbst finanzierten Crew unter Ausgangssperren und im Ausnahmezustand geführt.
Der Film ist eine Koproduktion zwischen der Türkei und Deutschland, wo auch die Postproduktion und der Schnitt realisiert wurden.
Regisseur
Mustafa Emin Büyükcoşkun wurde 1988 in Istanbul geboren. Er studierte Geschichte und Soziologie an der Boğaziçi-Universität. Während dieser Zeit drehte er seinen zweiten Kurzfilm Geranium, der unter anderem auf den Festivals in Triest, Premier Plans, Montpellier und Istanbul gezeigt wurde.
Als freiwilliger Videograf für humanitäre Hilfsaktionen reiste er durch Afrika, Asien, den Balkan und den Kaukasus. Als Kamera- und Regieassistent arbeitete er mit Regisseuren wie Semih Kaplanoğlu, Zeki Demirkubuz, Aida Begić und Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun zusammen.
Er drehte die Dokumentarserie Von Herbergen zu Wolkenkratzern für das türkische Nationalfernsehen. Mit einem Fokus auf Archivierungspraktiken und Medienarchäologie studiert er derzeit Medienkunst an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe. Aktuell entwickelt er gemeinsam mit Semih Gülen seinen ersten Spielfilm Athlete.

Synopsis
Set Off is the story of 33 young people who dreamed of another journey but took a road that never reached its destiny. Following their path, in the shadow of their ghosts and memories, this film is an exploration of how and what to tell after an unmourned disaster. It is a journey parallel to theirs, daydreaming in the middle of a conflict zone, where the landscape deconstructs power regimes.
Story
In the summer of 2015, a group of young people from Western Turkey organized a humanitarian aid campaign to help rebuild the city of Kobanê in northern Syria, which had been heavily damaged during its defense against ISIS. Their journey was more than just an aid campaign—it was a symbolic bridge between Turkish and Kurdish societies during ongoing peace negotiations.
Their journey ended in the border town of Suruç, across from Kobanê, where an ISIS militant detonated a bomb, killing 33 of them.
The Suruç massacre was not only an attack on the brotherhood between two peoples but also a sign of the bloody turmoil that was to follow in Turkey.
Set Off does not focus on this specific event but rather on the motivations and moral convictions that led these young people to embark on the journey. What inspired them to leave their comfortable surroundings? How did they decide to go?
The project was developed over four years as part of a large-scale oral history and visual memory initiative, working with survivors and witnesses of the massacre, as well as the relatives of those who lost their lives. Over 150 interviews were conducted by a small, self-funded crew under curfew and state of emergency conditions.
The film is a co-production between Turkey and Germany, where post-production and editing were completed.
Director
Mustafa Emin Büyükcoşkun was born in Istanbul in 1988. He studied History and Sociology at Boğaziçi University. During this time, he made his second short film Geranium, which was screened at festivals including Trieste, Premier Plans, Montpellier, and Istanbul.
As a volunteer videographer for humanitarian aid campaigns, he traveled across Africa, Asia, the Balkans, and the Caucasus. As a camera and directing assistant, he collaborated with filmmakers such as Semih Kaplanoğlu, Zeki Demirkubuz, Aida Begić, and Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun.
He directed the documentary series From Inns to the Skyscrapers for Turkish national television. Focusing on archival practices and media archaeology, he is currently studying Media Arts at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. At present, he is developing his first fiction film, Athlete, together with Semih Gülen.
