- Die Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Karlsruhe bietet ihren Studierenden einen einzigartigen Raum für engagiertes Lernen, Forschen und Experimentieren. Sie steht seit 1992 für die interdisziplinäre Verbindung von Kunst, Design und Theorie.
Ob Kommunikationsdesign, Produktdesign, Medienkunst, Ausstellungsdesign und Szenografie oder Kunstwissenschaft und Medienphilosophie – allen Studiengängen gemeinsam ist die fächerübergreifende, meist projektbasierte Arbeit und eine individuelle Betreuung der Studierenden. Die Kooperation mit dem Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) unterstreicht und erweitert die interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung. Zusätzlich zu den eigenen Lehrangeboten vergibt die HfG regelmäßig Gastprofessuren und Lehraufträge an internationale Künstler:innen und Wissenschaftler:innen. Hinzu kommen weltweite Austauschprogramme sowie Partnerschaften mit regionalen und internationalen Kultureinrichtungen und Hochschulen.
Die Verbindung von Theorie und Praxis zielt vor allem darauf ab, Selbstständigkeit zu entwickeln und die Studierenden auf unterschiedlichste berufliche Anforderungen vorzubereiten. Wer sich für ein Studium an der Hochschule entscheidet, genießt den Freiraum, sein eigenes Potenzial zu entwickeln.
Studierende haben die Möglichkeit, ihre Arbeiten in temporären Ausstellungen und auch dem jährlichen Rundgang zu präsentieren, an Vortrags- und Filmprogrammen mitzuwirken, sowie an künstlerischen und wissenschaftlichen Rechercheprojekten teilzunehmen.
Als eine der wenigen Hochschulen in Deutschland vergibt die HfG Karlsruhe die Abschlüsse Diplom und Magister Artium, die große Freiheit in der Ausgestaltung des Studiums bieten. Alle Abschlüsse haben volle Bologna-Kompatibilität und sind international anerkannt.

- The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) offers its students a unique space for dedicated learning, research and experimentation. Since 1992 it has stood for the interdisciplinary combination of art, design and theory.
Whether Communication Design, Product Design, Media Art, Exhibition Design and Scenography or Art Research and Media Philosophy, all courses share an interdisciplinary approach, that is student centered and mainly focusing on project-based work. The cooperation with the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) underlines and expands this interdisciplinary orientation. In addition to its own courses, the HfG regularly awards visiting professorships and teaching assignments to international artists and academics. There are also worldwide exchange programs and partnerships with regional and international cultural institutions and universities.
The combination of theory and practice is primarily aimed at developing independent thinking and preparing students for a wide range of professional demands. Those who choose to study at the university will enjoy the freedom of realizing their individual potential.
Students will have the opportunity to exhibit their work in temporary exhibitions or the annual open studies (Rundgang), contribute to lecture and film programs, as well as participate in artistic and scientific research projects.
The HfG Karlsruhe is one of the few universities in Germany to award both the Diploma and Magister of Arts degrees, which offer great freedom in the design of their study fields. All degrees are internationally recognized and fully Bologna-compatible.

- The talk and live music-led meditation session draws on sound design, psychology, neuroscience, folklore and diasporic spirituality. Studies of Air and Smoke is both an art performance and a meta-educational intervention; it is neither a concert nor a lecture. Thiago Leiros-Costa explores the dualism between being an artist and a scientist, performing both roles in the same evening and exploring their connections. The first part of the session assesses the nature of attention and awareness, and how the brain and our expectations are vital in constructing our experience of the world around us. Participants are invited to approach the second part, a musical performance, as a meditation session. Prompts and triggers given during the talk will be explored in the course of the performance. The music will range from folk to free improvisation and sound design.
