Ebru Inanc traveled for ten days outside of the touristic places of the city of Istanbul. In her own words, she got to know the “true face” of the city, and from it, a video collage was created, revealing a very personal impression of the current situation of the country. It focusses on the thoughts of the people she interviews; the taxi driver who had to cut his studies short out of family reasons, the engineer who comes from a small village but had obtained a scholarship in order to be able to study, the woman who is toying with the idea of leaving Istanbul but cannot bring herself to do it, the person who rents costumes, who can only relax when he leaves the city but returns anyway every morning. Turkey finds itself currently in a foggy situation. Nobody knows exactly how it could have come to this, or if, when and how it should go on. The constant back and forth is mirrored not only in statements of the residents of Istanbul, but also in the image of the city. The build-ups, the density, and the frenzy of the city drives people to their limits and yet they cannot turn away from it. The standstill emerges as a recurring element of Inanc’s work. The future remains uncertain.
What remains is a portrait of a spot of earth.
What remains is the sound of the landscape.
What remains is the telling of a story.
In her cinematic narrative, Elenya Bannert deals with the concepts of age, forgetting, the demands of our current times, and a life that is nowadays so hard to come by.
Matteo is old, and lives alone on an Alpine pasture. He is, however, not completely alone; his cow reminds him from time to time that she needs milking. Reading has become difficult for Matteo, and he has also become a little forgetful and peculiar.
The final film shoot began in March 2017. The idyllic village of Soglio in the canton of Graubünden / Schweiz serves as the backdrop for the story.
In order to be able to deal with image, sound and narration equally, the film consequently rejects acting, and the story is told through the eyes of the daughter, bringing the narrative character of the story distinctly to the fore.
The emerging cinematic material appears documentary in an atmospheric way and encourages the viewer to confront individual phantasies.
The human Body.
The Rediscovery.
The Accepting.
The Awakening.
These thoughts are the beginning of the game Vakna, a world of thoughts that deals with the perception and acceptance of the human body without clothes, thereby questioning social influences.
In this world of thoughts it is possible for the player to find out more about himself, his own perception, his own behavior, his own morality and his own ritual thoughts concerning the human body through discoverable questions and statements.
Vakna awakens together with the player. The player begins to question the own perception, the own behavior, the own morality and the own ritual thought processes concerning the human body and perhaps to rearrange or change them for themselves and for other people.
At the end of this game, each person has to decide for himself whether the body's reawakening and the „re-experiencing“ of the world would be tried out or lived.
Also, the questions to be answered are how to deal with the newly gained acceptance and rediscovery. But in this decision, the player does not have to answer to the game, but to himself and the fellow human beings of society.
This computer game is a single player in the field of serious and educational games that can be played with a keyboard and a mouse.
“Critical Zones”: Developing concepts and approaches for grasping the New Climatic Regime (Bruno Latour), that is the transformations in the relations of humans to their “terrestrial” conditions of existence. – The seminar series of Bruno Latour at HfG analyses these transformations as epistemic breaks and shifts of knowledge by drawing an analogy to the scientific revolution in the 17th century, where, after a crisis of former sound knowledge, new epistemic systems, representations and narrations in art, science, and religion had to be constructed and reintegrated into new dispositifs of knowledge. The project tackles an important aesthetic question, which overpasses simple forms of illustration of knowledge: How central is the imaginary capacity of the arts in constructing representations and narrations that are depictions and “generators” of new knowledge systems and therefore vital means of cultural change?
The exhibition at HfG in November will display some preliminary results of the projects developed by the seminar participants. It presents an opportunity to discuss – in a mode of work-in-progress – research questions, aesthetic approaches and epistemic experiments with colleagues and students of HfG and ZKM.
Opening: Nov 7, 19:00; duration: Nov 8, 10:00-19:00, Nov 9, 10:00-15:00

'Marginal/Lateral’ or non-institutional, self-initiated, informal and small private archives are cropping up across the globe to address gaps and offer a voice to marginalized bodies and realities. These are often not archives in the strict sense of the word, but come in the form of indexes or creative projects that reframe materials and data. Both in parallel and in conjunction, an unprecedented number of research based creative practices, which use appropriation and re-framing (by drawing from the archive or building it) as the basis for their work, and to make sense of a rapidly changing mediatic reality, have also emerged. The added context of the internet and the birth of new media have created the urgency to create a new language and method of archiving, as well for an ethical debate, across different disciplines, around what it really means to share (and often commodify) archival materials. The above fields of enquiry: subaltern archives, research based artistic practices and the emergence of new media are all shaking the archive—both in terms of content and container—in different ways. In order to re-shape our ways of keeping a dynamic record, of sorting and storing data, of preserving all voices, we cannot ignore small scale archival initiatives and attempts.
The theme of HfG’s 30 year anniversary is “the future of” and a future cannot be consciously built without facing a new set of questions around archiving present and past. In order to upend our learned assumptions about reality, about Western forms of knowledge, classification and value; in order to keep a record of the recent past and its material and immaterial transformations; in order to address the multiple, yet interconnected urgencies of the present, we need both the archive and the question, and neither of these ingredients can ever be static. Rather than adopting a notion of progress in relation to the future in general and the future of archiving more specifically, we would like to explore the idea of the future within the framework of potential.
Guests include artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Cyberfeminism Index Founder, Mindy Seu, director of Villa Romana in Florence, Angelika Stepken, researcher, Özge Çelikaslan and more. A detailed schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
"Materials on Exhibition Design and Scenography" is a new publication series from the department of Exhibition Design and Scenography at the HfG Karlsruhe. It deals with the design of narrative spaces as a critical design practice. "Materials on Exhibition Design and Scenography" is designed as an ongoing collection of material in which contributions to discussions in our field are compiled and made accessible. We view the individual issues as exhibition spaces and the printed pages as displays. We are not primarily concerned with the production of new contributions, but rather with existing materials that create new contexts and perspectives through their selection, combination, contextualization or commentary, as well as their designed presentation in print form.
The first issue of "Materials for Exhibition Design & Scenography" deals with exhibition design as an artistic practice that was increasingly used by artists as well as architects and designers as their own form of expression in the 1980s. An interview with the American artist Judith Barry describes how design was used in the politicized art of the 1980s. Helmut analyzes the complicated historical relationship between artistic and creative work and explores the question of the extent to which the social reformist aspirations of design have once again become the starting point for both critical and creative work.
The exhibition "Seeing With Four Eyes" follows the object biography of the statue Ngonnso’ from Cameroon through different geographical, temporal and institutional contexts. This first sentence is already flawed. Is statue even an adequate term to describe a figure that represents a living being to some people, while others merely see it as an example of material culture? And is biography the right term to describe the life of an artifact? Is it bound to its material being or does it exist well before it is carved out of wood and long after it is eaten by termites or lost in a burning museum? In the endeavour to learn more about Ngonnso’, I decided to call her by her name, thereby not predefining what she is. I tried to gather the fragments of a story that do not form a whole. I followed threads that go back to the time of creation, to punitive expeditions and acts of war carried out by the German colonial empire, cultural festivals in Cameroon and Europe, and to a museum trying to come to terms with its collection. I talked to people who have engaged either with Ngonnso’ herself or with the campaigns, national laws, and politics that have influenced and continue to influence her. Ngonnso’ is in a state of limbo: she will be transported from a museum depot in the outskirts of Berlin to a new museum institution in the city centre in the spring of 2019, once again being transformed from a stored object into an exhibition object. At the same time, she is subject of ongoing restitution negotiations between the paramount chief of the kingdom Nso’, Fon Sehm Mbinglo I, the state of Cameroon, the Ethnological Museum Berlin and the German state. "Seeing With Four Eyes" offers a space to reflect upon this entity through its multiple and contradictory dimensions.
