Motten orientieren sich nachts am Mond, folgen dabei jedoch einer Illusion und kreisen schließlich stundenlang um eine Laterne. Die Motten zum Licht ist ein Film über die Vielschichtigkeit der Wirklichkeit – eine filmische Reise in poetische Welten.
Ein zentrales Thema ist die Relativität der Realitätsbildung durch subjektive Wahrnehmung. Die Bilder spielen mit den Seherfahrungen des Betrachters, darunter Mimikerkennung, Computerspielästhetik, Blockbuster-Referenzen und Zeitempfinden. Der Film ist durch ein Manifest strukturiert, das in Form von Texttafeln zu Beginn neuer thematischer Kapitel erscheint. Diese Tafeln, die an fernöstliche Schriften erinnern, bestehen tatsächlich aus deutschen Texten, zusammengesetzt aus zerschnittenen lateinischen Buchstaben.
Das Filmmaterial entstand zwischen 2002 und 2003 in Russland, Sibirien, der Mongolei, Italien, den USA und Deutschland.
Der Film bildet das erste Kapitel einer Trilogie, die schließlich in The World's Simile (57 Min., 2005) zusammengeführt wurde.

Moths navigate by the moon at night, yet they fall for an illusion and end up circling a streetlamp for hours. The Moths to the Light is a film about the complexity of reality—an artistic journey into poetic worlds.
A central theme of the film is the relativity of reality formation through subjective perception. The visuals play with the viewer’s visual experiences, including facial recognition, video game aesthetics, blockbuster references, and the perception of time. The film is structured by a manifesto, appearing as text panels at the beginning of each thematic chapter. These panels, resembling East Asian scripts, are actually German texts composed of cut-up Latin letters.
The footage was shot between 2002 and 2003 in Russia, Siberia, Mongolia, Italy, the USA, and Germany.
The film serves as the first chapter in a trilogy, which was later merged into The World's Simile (57 min., 2005).
