What happens when individuals live in narrow, confined spaces with hardly any personal but standardized, firmly anchored, textile-less furnishings, in which they are exposed to permanent surveillance and control as well as strictly regulated daily routines?
Mascha Dilger investigates the parameters of sanctioning spaces: visits to various prisons and interviews with former inmates are processed in the spatial installation "7qm - Innen(an)sichten". Realities of a place hidden from society are revealed.
The work illuminates how attempts of mental escape and self-determination can emerge from the grid-like everyday life of a total institution. Site-specific and subcultural manifestations are considered, which are to be understood as survival strategies.

"About Fighting the Fear (of the World)" is a speculative video work that covers a spectrum of phenomena around maps, fear, war, traveling, and the body, with a focus on the practice of mapping as a tool to oppress and control land and people. The video attempts to frame the issue by bringing together many different stories to create a cluster that may not be representative but illuminates some parts of the issue. Aesthetically and structurally, the video is inspired by role-playing games, pre-vis technique (used in film productions), and found footage. The scenario is set in a distant future in which climate change and mass extinction have long since had an impact and beasts that used to watch over the unknown before the big colonization have returned. As the main character, the viewer searches for remnants of the old world, guided by a narrator, in order to understand why everything had to be mapped.
With a combination of practical, experimental and research-based approaches and a focus on materials, students and teachers in the Afterfire seminar examined our relationship to fire throughout history and in comparison to today. Led by guest professors Paco Boekelmann and Kevin Rouff from Studio Thusthat, the seminar took place in the winter semester 2022/23 at the HfG Karlsruhe.
In a time of wars, scarce energy resources and climate crisis, the Afterfire Seminar focused on our particular transitional period in which we are (theoretically) moving away from fossil fuels and looking for new sources of fire. Through lectures, guest talks, site visits, workshops and individual work, students and teachers explored the use of fire and different fuels over the centuries, focussing on what remains after the fire - the ash.
Following a visit to the coal-fired power station in Karlsruhe's Rheinhafen, Studio Thusthat organised a workshop to explore the precursor to hard coal: charcoal. The students created workpieces, mainly out of wood, and built a kiln in which all the objects were burnt without oxygen on the last day of the workshop, turning them into charcoal.
The second workshop focussed on the three "new" main alternative fuel sectors: the woody biomass sector, the agricultural by-products sector and the waste-to-energy sector. For two days, students worked in groups to analyse the representative fuels wood, straw and municipal waste with regard to the many nuances that speak both for and against their use as an energy source.
Alongside and in conjunction with the workshops, individual student projects were developed throughout the semester, which built on Studio Thusthat's research and worked out their own processes, phenomena, effects or connections of fire in theory and practice.
At the end of the semester, all student projects were presented in an exhibition in the Lichthof of the HfG Karlsruhe, where the projects were explained and shown to the public. A selection of the projects on which students continued to work beyond the seminar was exhibited during the Rundgang and at the Karlsruhe Museumsnacht 2023.

Whether space, image, text, object or system – design is always also communication. Against the backdrop of increasing radicalization, segmentation and polemization of social discourses, the relationship between design and communication seems more volatile today than ever. New communications media, channels, spaces and systems are constantly emerging. Machines, objects, even entire environments become independent actors that communicate with us and interact on various media levels. How can we sound out the contexts, the conditions that lead to possibility and the interdependencies of impact with regard to designed communication? What concepts are needed to conceptualize the relationship between design and communication from a present-day point of view?
The DGTF conference “Matters of Communication” creates a space for discussion about how communication is designed today and how design is communicated today. What are the pioneering approaches and methods of design research in relation to communication through and within contemporary forms of expression, as well as cultural and economic production? How do research projects reflect “Matters of Communication”, i.e. the form and materiality of designed communication, and their role in the emergence of attributions and interpretation contexts? What is the role that design research plays in the development of relevant questions and solutions? How is theory formation and translation into teaching and practice carried out?
PROGRAM
The program consists of lectures, discussions and workshops grouped into four thematic areas:
Language and Image (in German) The design of communication has always moved between the more denotative qualities of the written word and the greater connotative freedom of the image. Depending on the creative conception, the visual design serves to support the flow of communication or, with an expressive gesture, breaks with the usual forms of visual representation. How is communication in language and image designed, perceived/received and interpreted today? What are the factors that influence the design of visual communication? What influence does visual communication have on prevailing social discourses?
Space and staging (in English) From non-places to utility buildings to narrative experience spaces, from physical buildings to augmented hybrid worlds to virtual reality - spatiality is more complex than ever. How do contemporary spaces function as communication interfaces? How is the design of these spaces used to argue, narrate and communicate? What role does simulation play as a specific form of expression in the context of economic and social issues?
Object and Interaction (in German) Designed objects are a combination of material, function and aesthetics as well as an interface in complex technological, economic and social contexts. How is communication between objects and people, and between people and objects, organized today? How do these objects communicate in relation to their position in economic and ecological cycles? What role does materiality or immateriality play in relation to the communicative abilities of objects?
Society and system Complex systems such as computers, companies or societies are based on the constant exchange of materials, energies and symbols and are therefore communicative systems per se. How are such systems designed? How does design deal with different stakeholder groups in these systems? What does good communication mean in a system, and how are friction and conflict used as productive forces?

In this work, I examine different concepts of history. The discussions surrounding the German culture of remembrance serve as my starting point. However, the aim is not to intervene directly in the polarized debate. Instead, the focus is on the ideological foundations that underlie different ways of dealing with one's own history. The work “After Evil” by philosopher Robert Meister forms the theoretical leitmotif. In it, he criticizes the position of condemning the past as evil, but treating it at the same as something that is separated from the present. The arguments are elaborated on the basis of films by Alexander Kluge and Harun Farocki, among others.

Soccer summer 2016: the officers at a Brussels police station are eagerly awaiting the European Championship quarter-finals, but an African arrested as a terror suspect has to be cross-examined. The recent arrival in Europe is also an enthusiastic soccer fan and involves the increasingly unnerved police officers in ever new conversations about his perspective on our seemingly crisis-ridden circumstances.
With everyday experiences from a country in civil war and yet with an unusual lightness of touch, the young Congolese author David-Minor Ilunga takes a new look at how we deal with racial profiling and the paranoid excesses of our fight against terror.

A village community, a community of destiny? They squat in puddles and hollows and talk about burning pubs and the same old saviors. A group of long-established people hoping that something will finally happen. Miroslava Svolikova's award-winning play is a polyphonic score that tells of the radicalization of a society with wit and poetry. The play premiered at the Burgtheater Vienna in 2016.
