      • Folded Sheets untersucht, wie sich Papier-Falttechniken auf Stahlbleche übertragen lassen. Rechteckige Tafeln werden durch gezielte Einschnitte und Faltungen in stabile dreidimensionale Formen gebracht, ohne dass Material verloren geht. Der Prozess des Schwarzbrennens, bei dem Leinöl in die Oberfläche eingebrannt wird, verleiht den Objekten ihre charakteristische schwarze Färbung, schützt sie vor Korrosion und unterstützt die strukturelle Festigkeit.

      • Folded Sheets explores the possiblities of transferring paper folds into steel sheet furniture. By using cuts and folds on rectangular steel sheets, tensioned rigid shapes without offcuts are created. The objects are further strengthend by blackening the surface with burnt linseed oil.

      • Die Kollektion "Folded Sheets" entstand aus dem Wunsch, die Transformation von Industriematerialien wie Stahl in funktionale Designs neu zu denken. Während eines Praktikums in einem Designstudio stieß ich auf die Herausforderungen, dreidimensionale Formen aus flachem Blech mit kostengünstigen, kleinserientauglichen Methoden zu schaffen. Industrielle Fertigungsmethoden überschreiten oft die Budgets kleiner Produktionsstätten, was mich dazu bewegte, alternative Techniken zu erkunden. Als Kind baute ich Flugzeuge und Autos, die ich in Filmen sah, aus Papier nach, indem ich nichts weiter als gefaltetes Papier und Klebeband verwendete. Während gekaufte Spielzeuge wie „Lego“ in ihren Optionen und Formen begrenzt waren, bot Papier unbegrenzte Möglichkeiten.

        Aus dieser Erfahrung versuchte ich, Inspiration zu schöpfen – nicht begrenzt durch das, was in einem CAD-Computerprogramm möglich ist, sondern durch praktische Experimente mit dem Verhalten von Papier beim Falten in verschiedenen Formen. Genau wie das Falten von Papier leicht zugänglich und in der Form unbegrenzt ist, ist das Biegen von Blech für einen Kleindesigner leicht zugänglich. Die Kollektion ist ein direkter Transfer meiner Papiermodelle.

        Durch Falten werden flache Bleche in stabile, dreidimensionale Strukturen verwandelt. Inspiriert vom Papierfalten, verwendet der Prozess präzise Schnitte und Biegungen, um Stabilität und einzigartige Formen ohne zusätzliche Verstärkungen zu schaffen. Durch das Einbringen von Spannung in gekrümmte Oberflächen und scharfe Falze gewinnt das Material eine bemerkenswerte Festigkeit, die seinen ursprünglichen flachen Zustand bei Weitem übertrifft. Die gefalteten Formen stellen die Wahrnehmung von Stahl als schweres, unflexibles Material in Frage. Die resultierenden Formen wirken leicht und zerbrechlich und erinnern in ihrer visuellen Weichheit an Papier. Dennoch schaffen die Falten robuste Designs, die schwere Lasten tragen können. Jedes Stück dieser Kollektion wird aus einem einzigen Blech kaltgewalzten Stahls gefertigt. Das Falten als Methode zur Formgebung minimiert Abfall, indem es auf ein einziges Material anstatt auf ein Verbundmaterial setzt.

        Das Schwarzfärben von Stahl ist eine fast vergessene Konservierungsmethode. Ohne Schutzbeschichtungen wird Stahl mit der Zeit korrodieren. Bei dieser Technik wird der Stahl erhitzt und mit Leinöl beschichtet, das mit der Oberfläche reagiert und eine schützende schwarze Oxidschicht bildet. Der Prozess verhindert nicht nur Rost, sondern temperiert auch den Stahl, wodurch seine Steifigkeit und Haltbarkeit erhöht werden. Im Gegensatz zu modernen Rostschutzmethoden wie Galvanisieren oder Zinkbeschichtung ist das Schwarzfärben umweltfreundlich und produziert minimalen Abfall. Das Schwarzfärben von Stahl passt zur kostengünstigen Falttechnik, da es auch ohne industrielle Maschinen durchführbar ist. Durch sorgfältige Überwachung der Temperatur und der Menge an Leinöl, die auf das Blech aufgetragen wird, können verschiedene Oberflächenfinishs erzeugt werden. Farben von Blau, Gelb und Grün können in der resultierenden Oxidationsschicht gesehen werden. Mit jeder Anwendung von Leinöl wird die Oberfläche dunkler, bis sie schließlich eine tiefschwarze Farbe annimmt. Unter der schwarzen Oberfläche schimmern die vorherigen Farbtöne von Blau, Gelb und Grün immer noch durch.

      • Folding transforms flat sheets into rigid, three-dimensional structures. Inspired by paper folding,the process uses precise cuts and bends to create stability and unique shapes without additional reinforcements. By introducing tension into curved surface and sharp creases, the material gains remarkable strength, far exceeding its original flat state. The folded forms challenge the perception of steel as a heavy, inflexible material. The resulting shapes appear light and delicate, resembling paper in their visual softness. Yet the folds create robust designs capable of supporting heavy weights. Each piece in this collection is crafted from a single sheet of cold-rolled steel. Folding as a way of crafting the shapes minimizes waste by relying on a singular material rather than a composite.


        The "Folded Sheets" collection was born from a desire to rethink how industrial materials like steel can be transformed into functional designs. During an internship at a design studio, I encountered the challenges of creating three-dimensional forms from flat sheet metal using cost-effective, small-series methods. Industrial manufacturing methods often exceed the budgets of small-scale production, prompting me to explore alternative techniques. As a child, I rebuilt planes and cars I saw in movies out of paper, using nothing more than folded paper and tape. While store bought toys like „lego“ were limiting in options and shapes, paper was limitless in what I could create.
        From this experience, I tried to draw inspiration—not limiting myself to what can be done in a CAD computer program but experimenting hands-on with how a sheet of paper behaves when folded in various ways. Just as paper folding was easy to access and limitless in form, sheet metal bending is easily accessible to a small-scale designer. The collection is a direct transfer of my paper models.

        Steel blackening is a nearly forgotten preservation method. Without protective coatings, steel will corrode over time. In this technique, the steel is heated and coated in linseed oil, which reacts with the surface to form a protective black oxide layer. The process not only prevents rust but also tempers the steel, enhancing its rigidity and durability.
        Unlike modern rust prevention methods like galvanizing or zinc coating, blackening is environmentally friendly and produces minimal waste. Steel blackening aligns with the low-budget folding technique in a way that it is also achievable without industrial machinery. By carefully monitoring the temperature and the amount of linseed oil applied to the sheet metal, a variety of finishes can be created. Colors ranging from blue, yellow, and green can be seen in the resulting oxidation layer. With each application of linseed oil, the surface becomes darker until it eventually results in a deep black color. Underneath the black surface, the previous hues of blue, yellow, and green still shimmer through.

              • Schon als Kind habe ich Flugzeuge und Autos aus Filmen nachgebaut – nur mit gefaltetem Papier und Klebeband. Anders als bei gekauftem Spielzeug wie LEGO bot mir Papier die grenzenlose Freiheit, jede erdenkliche Form zu erschaffen.

                Aus dieser Erfahrung schöpfte ich meine Inspiration: Statt mich darauf zu beschränken, was in einem CAD-Programm möglich ist, experimentierte ich haptisch mit dem Materialverhalten von gefaltetem Papier. Um auf schwere Industriemaschinen zur Stahlverformung verzichten zu können, erforschte ich diverse Falttechniken. Mein Ziel war die Entwicklung einer „Falt-Sprache“, die sich auf Stahl übertragen lässt und ein intuitives, effizientes Arbeiten ermöglicht.

                Nach zahlreichen Formtests fokussierte ich mich auf die vielversprechendsten Ansätze und verfeinerte diese anhand von Modellen im Maßstab 1:10, um die Konstruktionen im Detail zu verstehen und zu optimieren.

                Durch die ausschließliche Verwendung rechteckiger Bleche konnte ich den Materialverschnitt reduzieren und die Recyclingfähigkeit verbessern. Oft entstehen gerade durch Faltungen und Biegungen überraschend feste und stabile Objekte.

                To avoid using heavy industrial machines to form steel sheets, I explored different paper-folding techniques. My goal was to develop a kind of folding language I could later apply to steel, allowing me to work intuitively and efficiently.
                After testing many shapes, I focused on a few that worked well and refined them further, building 1:10 scale models to better understand and improve the designs.
                By using only rectangular sheets, I could reduce material waste and improve recyclability. Folded and bent shapes often result in surprisingly strong and stable objects.

                • The Folded Chair from my Diploma collection ”Folded Sheets“ uses a rectangular steel sheet to create a comfortable chair shell. The sheet is cut and folded to wrap around the frame and create a round shell-like shape under tension. This tension makes for a comfortable round shape that slightly leands back as you press your back into it. The shell and the frame are held together by tension. No screws used, only the tension of the steel sheet.

                    • Die Bank vereint zwei verschiedene Falttechniken der Stahlblechbearbeitung. Die Sitzfläche wird durch zweidimensionale Kanten geformt, der untere Teil zu übereinandergeschobenen Flächen. Dadurch läuft die rechteckige Sitzfläche zu einer ovalen Form Richtung Boden.
                      Ein zentraler Falz in der Sitzfläche erhöht die Stabilität und dient beidseitig als Wasserablauf. Durch die gewölbte Form liegt die Bank nur an den beiden Außenseiten auf, während sich die Vorder- und Rückseite elegant nach oben neigen. Dies verleiht der gesamten Struktur eine leichte, dynamische Form und verbindet Funktionalität mit Ästhetik.

The top surface is expertly brake-formed, creating three distinct folds that not only ensure a comfortable seating area but also allow the rectangular seating surface to curve gracefully towards the ground. This design is further enhanced by a strategic cut and slide method, which introduces tension to the bench's feet and contributes to its rounded base.

                      A central crease in the seating surface adds stability and serves as a water drainage channel on both sides. The rounded shape allows the bench to rest on the ground only at its two sides, with the front and back elegantly curving upwards. This design lends the entire structure a lighter, more dynamic feel, making it both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
