Seit Mai 2026 baut Umpolen einen temporären Nachbar*innenschaftstreff und Kulturort im ehemaligen Löwenbräukeller in der Karlsruher Weststadt auf. Ausgangspunkt ist jedes Mal der Raum selbst, von dem aus sich das Kollektiv dem Thema Nachbar*innenschaft widmen will. Die Orte stellen eine Brücke zwischen sozialem Raum, Werkstatt, Arbeitsraum, Ausstellungsraum, Garten und versuchen Menschen in Dialoge miteinander zu setzen. Dabei arbeitet Umpolen sowohl mit lokalen Initiativen als auch mit Menschen außerhalb Karlsruhes zusammen und entwickelt Formate, die gegenseitiges Lernen, Gespräche und Beisammensein ermöglichen.
Im ehemaligen Löwenbräukeller wird versucht im Alltag Strukturen zu schaffen in dem die Nachbar*innenschaft nicht nur fremde Gesichter bleiben, sondern Mitmenschen sind, mit denen man solidarisch lebt und in Kontakt tritt.
Der Raum ist zwei mal die Woche geöffnet und bespielt manchmal mit Programm manchmal als reinen Treffpunkt den Ort und beschäftigt sich auch mit den Erinnerungen, die an den Ort geknüpft sind.
Umpolen hat sich als Kollektiv im Sommer 2025 gegründet und besteht aus Studierenden der Studiengänge Ausstellungsdesign und Szenografie, Kunstwissenschaft und Medienphilosophie und Kommunikationsdesign von der HfG, Studierenden der Kunstakademie und Menschen aus Karlsruhe, die zusammengekommen sind um Gemeinschaft und Kulturarbeit in Karlsruhe zugänglich zu machen. Umpolen arbeitet zudem fest mit Radio ShbShb zusammen, die die Veranstaltungen live online übertragen.

The event featured workshops, “Kitchen for All,” film screenings, concerts, and readings.
Since May 2026, the collective has been setting up a temporary neighborhood gathering place and cultural space in the former Löwenbräukeller in Karlsruhe’s Weststadt district. Each time, the starting point is the space itself, from which Umpolen aims to explore the theme of neighborliness. These spaces serve as a bridge between social space, workshop, workspace, exhibition space, and garden, and aim to bring people together in dialogue. In doing so, Umpolen collaborates with both local initiatives and people outside of Karlsruhe, developing formats that facilitate mutual learning, conversation, and socializing.
At the former Löwenbräukeller, Umpolen strives to create structures in our daily lives where neighbors aren’t just strangers, but fellow human beings with whom we live in solidarity and connect.
The space is open twice a week and serves as a venue, sometimes hosting events, sometimes simply as a gathering place, while also engaging with the memories tied to the location.
Umpolen was founded as a collective in the summer of 2025 and consists of students from the HfG and the Art Academy, as well as people from Karlsruhe who have come together to make community and cultural work accessible in Karlsruhe. Das Umpolen Kollektiv lässt sich als eine interdisziplinäre, offene Kollaboration von Studierenden der HfG Karlsruhe, der Kunstakademie Karlsruhe und anderen nicht studentischen Menschen aus Karlsruhe beschreiben, welche Gemeinschaft im Stadtleben niedrigschwellig erfahrbar machen wollen.
Gegründet im Sommer 2025, war das Grundanliegen des Kollektivs, sich mit Leerstand auseinanderzusetzen und in ungenutzten städtischen Räumen Treffpunkte zu eröffnen, die keinen Konsumzwang haben und das Beieinandersein in den Vordergrund stellen. Stadtlandschaften werden immer mehr Teil von Gentrifizierungsprozessen und einer kapitalistisch motivierten Aufwertung von als sozial betrachteten Orten, was aktiv dazu beiträgt, dass Menschen von Orten ausgeschlossen werden. Das Selbstverständnis von Umpolen beinhaltet, dies nicht als Fortschritt anzusehen, sondern als Bedrohung für die soziale, kulturelle Vielfalt und Geschichte eines Viertels. Räume werden zunehmend für eine klar definierte Zielgruppe konzipiert, wodurch anderen Menschen Sichtbarkeit, Zugang und Teilhabe entzogen wird. Hier will Umpolen ansetzen: Leerstand umfunktionieren zu soziokulturellen, unkommerziellen und konsumzwang freien Orten, wo aktiv Gemeinschaft gelebt werden kann und Menschen mit möglichst geringen Barrieren zusammenkommen können, sich austauschen und beteiligen können. Umpolen ist der festen Überzeugung, dass eine diverse Kulturlandschaft, welche Barrieren abbauen will und Menschen inkludiert und zusammenbringt, eine große Bereicherung für eine Stadtgesellschaft ist. Im Fokus stehen hier das einfache Verweilen sowie die Möglichkeit, durch partizipative Formate Kultur aktiv selbst mitzugestalten.
Im Januar 2026 wurde hierfür der Startpunkt gesetzt und in einer ersten Episode eine ehemalige Wohngemeinschaft in der Rüppurerstraße in der Karlsruher Südstadt zum Zentrum dieser Wünsche für die Stadtgesellschaft. Im Zeitraum von einer Woche stand der Ort allen interessierten Menschen offen und es fanden verschiedene Formate wie Konzerte, Performances, Workshops, Lesungen oder auch gemeinsames Kochen statt. Der Raum wurde für eine Woche unter dem übergeordneten Thema “Freund*innenschaft und Distanz” sowohl in den zwischenmenschlichen Begegnungen im Raum, als auch durch die während des Zeitraums installierten künstlerischen Interventionen, bespielt. Ein großes Anliegen stellte eine Teilhabe dar, welche sich auf möglichst viele verschiedene Menschen ausweiten lässt. Deswegen fand z.B. die in dieser Woche angebotene Lesung unter Corona-Sicherheitsbedingungen statt, um Menschen, die an der neuroimmunologischen Erkrankung ME/CFS erkrankt sind, ein physisches anwesend sein im Raum zu ermöglichen. Der Aspekt des solidarischen Miteinanders ist für das Kollektiv Umpolen in seinen Interventionen ein zentraler. Daher ist auch das Online Radio ShbShb für uns ein wichtiger Bestandteil, die alle Veranstaltungen live übertragen und dadurch Menschen, die nicht vor Ort sein können, einen Weg geben, trotzdem zuzuhören. Gemeinschaft und Kultur sollen gelebt werden können und so leerstehenden Orten neues Leben eingehaucht werden.
Seit Mai 2026 bespielt das Kollektiv Umpolen die ehemalige Gaststätte des Löwenbräukeller in der Sophienstraße 95 in der Karlsruher Weststadt. Der Hauptfokus hierbei ist die Wiederbelebung des Ortes als zentraler Treffpunkt der Nachbar*innenschaft. Es sollen Strukturen im Alltag wiederbelebt werden, in denen Nachbar*innen nicht nur fremde Gesichter bleiben, sondern Mitmenschen sind, mit denen man solidarisch lebt und in Kontakt tritt. Der Raum ist zwei mal die Woche geöffnet und wird manchmal mit Programm bespielt, manchmal als reiner Treffpunkt genutzt und beschäftigt sich auch mit den Erinnerungen, die an den Ort geknüpft sind. Im Prozess des Annehmen des Raumes wurde durch Umpolen daher mit vielen Menschen in der Straße über den Löwenbräukeller gesprochen; es wurde von Hochzeitsfeiern erzählt, von ehemaligen Kellner*innen, vom “Wohnzimmer der Weststadt”. Ähnlich wie die ehemalige Wohngemeinschaft verbinden viele mit diesem Ort gute Erinnerungen und so wurde auch das Projekt schnell mit viel Resonanz angenommen. Für Umpolen bedeutet das auch Verantwortung gegenüber diesem Raum und vor allem den Erinnerungen, die hier geschaffen wurden. Das Kollektiv will Räume nicht einfach einnehmen, ohne sich mit der Geschichte und den vergangenen Begegnungen auseinanderzusetzen. So eine Beschäftigung mit einem Ort geschieht nur im Dialog und hat auch dazu geführt, das Umpolen mit den unterschiedlichsten Generationen in Kontakt ist und das auch als wichtigen Bestandteil des Projekts angesehen wird, das alle Generationen teilhaben können, und so für Kinder auch zum Beispiel Spiele vor Ort zu finden sind.
In Zukunft sind neben den regulären Öffnungszeiten als Nachbarschaftscafé, eine öffentliche Gesprächsrunde mit Menschen aus Kultur und Politik geplant, um über Leerstand und Zwischenraumnutzungen zu sprechen, Performances und regelmäßige Lesekreise, in denen verschiedene Menschen aus ihrem Lieblingsbuch lesen. Als Kollektiv wurden außerdem der Vorgarten und ein Hochbeet im Hinterhof bepflanzt, um gemeinschaftlich zu Gärtnern und Nutzpflanzen im Stadtraum zu pflanzen. Bisher hat Umpolen im jetzigen Projekt eine Ausstellung mit und für Betroffene von ME/CFS organisiert, mehrere Listening Sessions veranstaltet, sowie eine Lesung von Alumni der HfG und Akademie, eine “Küche für Alle”, ein Film Screening und ein Konzert organisiert.
Während die Projekte temporär sind, versucht Umpolen Strukturen und Verbindungen zwischen Menschen und Organisationen zu schaffen die langanhaltend sind, Gärten die stehen bleiben, Kooperation die bestehen bleiben, Freund*innenschaften die gerad erst beginnen.

The Umpolen Collective can be described as an interdisciplinary, open collaboration among students at the HfG Karlsruhe, the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, and other non-student people from Karlsruhe who want to make community a low-threshold experience in urban life.
Founded in the summer of 2025, the collective’s primary goal was to address the issue of vacant properties and to open meeting places in unused urban spaces that are free from the pressure to consume and prioritize simply being together. Urban landscapes are increasingly becoming part of gentrification processes and a capitalistically driven revaluation of places considered “social,” which actively contributes to excluding people from these areas. Umpolen’s understanding of itself involves viewing this not as progress, but as a threat to a neighborhood’s social and cultural diversity and history. Spaces are increasingly designed for a clearly defined target group, thereby depriving other people of visibility, access, and participation. This is where Umpolen aims to make a difference: by repurposing vacant spaces into sociocultural, non-commercial places free from the pressure to consume—places where community can be actively cultivated and where people can come together, exchange ideas, and participate with as few barriers as possible. Umpolen firmly believes that a diverse cultural landscape—one that seeks to break down barriers, include people, and bring them together—is a great asset to urban society. The focus here is on simply spending time together and on the opportunity to actively help shape culture through participatory formats.
In January 2026, the project kicked off, and in its first episode, a former shared flat on Rüppurerstraße in Karlsruhe’s Südstadt became the focal point for these wishes for urban society. Over the course of a week, the space was open to anyone interested, and various events took place, including concerts, performances, workshops, readings, and communal cooking sessions. For one week, the space was brought to life under the overarching theme of “Friendship and Distance,” both through interpersonal encounters within the space and through the artistic interventions installed during that time. A key priority was ensuring participation that could be extended to as many different people as possible. For this reason, for example, the reading offered that week took place under COVID-19 safety protocols to enable people suffering from the neuroimmunological condition ME/CFS to be physically present in the space. The aspect of solidarity is central to the Umpolen collective’s interventions. That is why the online radio station ShbShb is also an important component for us; it broadcasts all events live, thereby giving people who cannot be there in person a way to listen anyway. Community and culture should be something people can experience firsthand, breathing new life into vacant spaces.

As part of the process of taking over the space, Umpolen engaged with many people on the street to discuss the Löwenbräukeller; stories were shared about wedding celebrations, former waitstaff, and the “living room of Weststadt.” Much like the former shared apartment, many people associate fond memories with this place, and so the project was quickly embraced with a great deal of enthusiasm. For Umpolen, this also means taking responsibility for this space and, above all, for the memories that were created here. The collective does not want to simply take over spaces without engaging with their history and past experiences. Such engagement with a place can only happen through dialogue, and it has also led to Umpolen connecting with a wide range of generations—a connection that is viewed as an important part of the project, one in which all generations can participate, and which is why, for example, there are games for children to play on-site.
In the future, in addition to its regular hours as a neighborhood café, plans include a public discussion forum with people from the cultural and political spheres to talk about vacant properties and the use of underutilized spaces, as well as performances and regular reading circles where different people read from their favorite books. As a collective, the group has also planted the front garden and a raised bed in the backyard to engage in communal gardening and grow edible plants in the urban space.
So far, as part of the current project, Umpolen has organized an exhibition with and for people affected by ME/CFS, hosted several listening sessions, and organized a reading by alumni of the HfG and the Academy, a “Kitchen for Everyone,” a film screening, and a concert.
While the projects are temporary, Umpolen seeks to create lasting structures and connections between people and organizations—gardens that remain, collaborations that endure, and friendships that are just beginning.
