- Die Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung und das Zentrum für Kunst und Medien in Karlsruhe wurden in den 1990er Jahren von Gründungsdirektor Heinrich Klotz als Orte einer zeitgemäßen, auf die Neuen Medien gerichteten Forschung konzipiert. Sie bieten in ihrer Kombination von Hochschule und Kulturinstitution ausgezeichnete Vorbedingungen für eine Vernetzung künstlerischer und wissenschaftlicher Ansätze, für die es in Deutschland allerdings noch veränderte Rahmenbedingungen braucht.
Ein übergreifendes postgraduales Programm sollte interdisziplinäre Expertise versammeln und nutzen, um die Beziehungen von Kunst, Theorie und Gestaltung neu auszuloten und auf diese Weise an die wegweisende Gründungsidee von HfG und ZKM anzuknüpfen. Es sollte zugleich auf einen größeren Paradigmenwechsel antworten, der sich in Kunst und Kultur wie auch im wissenschaftlichen Bereich zu vollziehen scheint und der sich einerseits in Legitimationskrisen, andererseits in neuen und kreativen Formen der Recherche und Produktion von Wissen äußert. Die HfG Karlsruhe nimmt die Diagnose zum Anlass, um hybride Formate der Forschung neu zu konzipieren und auch die Funktion wissenschaftlicher Promotionen zu befragen.
Zur Vorstellung und Diskussion dieser programmatischen Überlegungen veranstaltete die HfG in Kooperation mit dem ZKM Karlsruhe am 5. und 6. Dezember 2024 ein erstes Symposium mit internationalen Gästen, das darauf abzielt, Räume und Ideen für eine sich transformierende Forschungspraxis zu entwerfen.
In vier Panels performten und diskutierten unter anderem die französische Wissenschaftshistorikerin und -philosophin Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, der Professor für Kunstwissenschaft und Medientheorie Matthias Bruhn, die Professorin für Time Based Media und Performance Filipa César, die Szenografin und stellvertretende HfG-Rektorin Constanze Fischbeck, der ZKM-Direktor Alistair Hudson, die Künstlerin und Professorin für Code and Image Susanne Kriemann, der Professor der ADBK München Armin Linke, die Leiterin des ZKM-Hertzlabs Tina Lorenz, die Künstlerin, Kuratorin und Mitglied des Raqs Media Collectives Monica Narula, der Professor für kritische Theorie und Medienphilosophie Simon Sheikh, die Performancekünstlerin und Aktivistin Joy Mariama Smith, die Professorin für Design Füsun Türetken und die Professorin für Digitale Ästhetik Nina Zschocke mit weiteren Expertinnen und Experten, dem Publikum sowie den Angehörigen beider Häuser.

- The Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Karlsruhe and the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe (ZKM) were conceived in the 1990s by founding director Heinrich Klotz as places for contemporary research focused on new media. With their combination of university and cultural institution, they offer excellent preconditions for the networking of artistic and scientific approaches, for which, however, a different framework is still needed in Germany.
An overarching postgraduate program was intended to bring together and utilize interdisciplinary expertise in order to explore the relationships between art, theory and design in a new way, thus building on the pioneering founding idea of the HfG and ZKM. At the same time, it is intended to respond to a larger paradigm shift that seems to be taking place in art and culture as well as in the scientific field and which is expressed on the one hand in crises of legitimization and on the other in new and creative forms of research and production of knowledge. The HfG Karlsruhe was taking this diagnosis as an opportunity to redesign hybrid formats of research and also to question the function of academic doctorates.
To present and discuss these programmatic considerations, the HfG organized a first symposium with international guests in cooperation with the ZKM Karlsruhe on 5 and 6 December 2024, which aims to design spaces and ideas for a transforming research practice.

- "Über das Bekämpfen der Angst (vor der Welt)" ist eine spekulative Videoarbeit, die ein Spektrum von Phänomenen rund um Karten, Angst, Krieg, Reisen und den Körper abdeckt, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf der Praxis der Kartierung als Instrument zur Unterdrückung und Kontrolle von Land und Menschen liegt. Das Video versucht, einen Rahmen für das Thema zu schaffen, indem es viele verschiedene Geschichten zu einem Cluster zusammenführt, der vielleicht nicht repräsentativ ist, aber einige Teile des Themas beleuchtet. Ästhetisch und strukturell ist das Video von Rollenspielen, der Pre-Vis-Technik (die in Filmproduktionen verwendet wird) und Found Footage inspiriert. Das Szenario ist in einer fernen Zukunft angesiedelt, in der Klimawandel und Massenaussterben längst ihre Auswirkungen gezeigt haben und die Bestien, die vor der großen Kolonisierung über das Unbekannte wachten, zurückgekehrt sind. In der Rolle der Hauptfigur sucht der Zuschauer, angeleitet von einem Erzähler, nach Überresten der alten Welt, um zu verstehen, warum alles kartiert werden musste.

- "About Fighting the Fear (of the World)" is a speculative video work that covers a spectrum of phenomena around maps, fear, war, traveling, and the body, with a focus on the practice of mapping as a tool to oppress and control land and people. The video attempts to frame the issue by bringing together many different stories to create a cluster that may not be representative but illuminates some parts of the issue. Aesthetically and structurally, the video is inspired by role-playing games, pre-vis technique (used in film productions), and found footage. The scenario is set in a distant future in which climate change and mass extinction have long since had an impact and beasts that used to watch over the unknown before the big colonization have returned. As the main character, the viewer searches for remnants of the old world, guided by a narrator, in order to understand why everything had to be mapped.

Die Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Karlsruhe kann das Sommersemester 2025 mit einer guten Nachricht eröffnen: Neben einer Reihe neuer Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter sind wieder neue Berufungen zu feiern.
Wie gewohnt, wird der Eröffnungsabend auch für die Überreichung von Diplomzeugnissen genutzt. Neben einigen Grußworten sind außerdem performative Beiträge zu erleben. Im Anschluss an den offiziellen Teil des Abends dürfen sich Studierende und Gäste auf einen gemeinsamen musikalischen Ausklang im Lichthof freuen.

- Unsere Bewegungen können wie eine Performance begriffen werden, wie etwas Flüchtiges, das nur im Moment existiert und nach der Vollendung weder sichtbar noch fassbar ist. Nur die Erinnerungen an das Erlebte bleiben als Spuren der Bewegung in unserem Geist erhalten. Path Tiles nutzt GPS-Daten, um diese besonderen Momente individueller Erfahrung einzufangen und in Form von Mustern in die physische Welt des sicht- und tastbaren Textils zu übertragen. Es entsteht eine tiefe Bindung zwischen Mensch und Objekt.
Jedes Muster steht für eine Reise, für eine Erfahrung. Dabei ist es egal, ob es sich um einen Spaziergang in der Natur, eine Reise in ein fernes Land oder einen wiederkehrenden Weg des Alltags handelt. Die daraus entstehenden Muster erzählen von den Gefühlen und Begegnungen, von dem Gesehenen und dem Erlebten und erinnern uns an das, was uns ausmacht.
Mit der Path Tiles Website habe ich ein Werkzeug entwickelt, um diese Reisen in Form von GPS-Daten in strickbare Muster zu verwandeln. Ich habe die Website so gestaltet, dass die Ästhetik des Musters durch zusätzliche Verschiebung, Verzerrung und Spiegelung individualisiert werden kann. Dies stellt außerdem sicher, dass Menschen mit der gleichen Strecke trotzdem persönliche Muster erstellen können. Das entstandene Muster wird dann in Form eines gestricktes Objekts zum Leben erweckt und wird zur materialisierten persönlichen Erfahrung. Durch die Einbeziehung des Nutzers in den Gestaltungsprozess entsteht eine weitere Ebene der Bindung zwischen Mensch und Objekt.
Für das Diplom habe ich exemplarisch fünf Objekte gestaltet, die mit diesen Mustern personalisiert werden können. Das Design der Objekte konzentriert sich darauf, das Reisen oder das „unterwegs sein“ in verschiedenen Situationen zu erleichtern. In diesem Prozess ist ein Schal mit Taschen, ein Umhang, der gleichzeitig als Decke genutzt werden kann, eine Tasche, die zugleich ein Kissen ist, eine Balaklava mit Ohrenschützern und ein Nackenkissen mit Rückenstütze und Taschen in den verlängerten Seitenteilen entstanden.
Für die finale Herstellung der Objekte haben fünf Personen die GPS-Daten verschiedener Routen verwendet um ihre persönlichen Muster auf der Path Tiles Website zu erstellen. Jedes der Objekte wurde zu einer Person, einer Reise, einem Muster zugeordnet und entsprechend produziert. Die fertigen Objekte sind die materialisierten Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen dieser Menschen.
Begleitend zu dieser Arbeit habe ich mit der Sammlung von Reisen in Form von Geschichten und Mustern begonnen. Hierbei ist ein kleines Booklet entstanden, das die Beiträge von 19 Menschen beinhaltet. Sie alle haben eine Erinnerung von einer Reise in Form von Text und Muster mit mir geteilt.

- Movement is like a performance, something momentous becoming invisible and untouchable as soon as it is complete. Only the memories of the experience remain as traces of the movement in our minds. Path Tiles captures these valuable moments of individual experiences and transfers them into the physical world of visible and tactile textiles, creating a deep relationship between person and object.
Each pattern represents a journey, an experience. It doesn't matter whether it's a walk in nature, a trip to a distant country, or a repeating path in everyday life. The resulting patterns tell of the emotions evoked by landscapes, the lessons learned along the way and the power of the journey to shape our lives.
With the Path Tiles website, I have developed a tool to transform these journeys into knitable patterns using GPS data. I designed the website so that the aesthetics of the pattern can be individualized through shifting, distorting, and mirroring. This ensures that even people with the same route can create personal patterns. The resulting pattern is then brought to life in the form of a knitted object, becoming a materialized personal experience. By involving the user in the design process, an additional layer of connection between person and object is created.
For my diploma, I have designed five objects that can be personalized with these patterns. The design of these objects focuses on making travelling or being "on the go" more comfortable. This process has resulted in the creation of a scarf with pockets, a cape that can also be used as a blanket, a bag that doubles as a pillow, a balaclava with ear cushions, and a neck pillow with back support and pockets in the extended side parts.
For the final production of the objects, five people used the GPS data of different routes to create their personal patterns on the Path Tiles website. Each of the objects was assigned to a person, a journey, a pattern, and then produced accordingly. The finished objects are the materialized experiences and memories of these people.
Accompanying this work, I have started collecting journeys in the form of stories and patterns. This resulted in a small booklet that includes contributions from 19 people. They all shared a memory of a journey in the form of text and pattern with me.

- Obszön, nerdy und aus Japan: Anime im Fernsehen zu schauen galt in vielen Haushalten in Deutschland als verrufen. Diese Rezeption von Anime entspricht zugleich den exotisierenden Stereotypen, die der (vorgeblich gesittete) Westen auf Japan projiziert. In ihrer Diplomarbeit nutzt Miki Feller Anime als Medium, um über anti-asiatischen Rassismus zu sprechen. Entstanden sind drei Videoarbeiten, die sie in ihrer Ausstellung „Versuche zu überschreiben“ gezeigt hat. Jedes Video erzählt eine eigene Geschichte, die in Karlsruhe spielt, unter anderem am Bahnhof, am Zoo und am Schloss. Es sind Versuche, eine vorherrschend weiße Umgebung zu beschreiben, sich dazu zu positionieren und davon zu distanzieren.

This perception of anime mirrors the exoticizing stereotypes projected onto Japan by the (allegedly civilized) West. In her diploma project, Miki Feller addresses anti-Asian racism in Germany by using anime as the medium. She created three video works and showcased them in the exhibition “Versuche zu überschreiben.” Each video tells a story set in Karlsruhe, for example, at the train station, the zoo, and the castle. These videos serve as attempts to describe a predominantly white environment, to position oneself in relation to it, and to distance oneself from it.

- MYCOSKENE is a material-theoretical interweaving around the theme of mycelium, the subterranean network of hyphae of fungi. Whether as a socio-philosophical metaphor, building and design material or in the form of a multi-media spatial installation - in her work, scenographer and conceptual designer Julia Ihls followed the finely interwoven structures of these organisms for over 8 months, which became decisive co-creators through their own temporality and qualities.

Konzipiert als wachsende Plattform, die die Fachbereiche der Staatlichen Hochschule für Gestaltung miteinander verbindet, wird das Labor als Raum für Präsentation, Bildung und Wissensvermittlung genutzt.
Das Bio Design Lab konzentriert sich auf die lokale Region, ihre Ressourcen und Möglichkeiten und zielt aktiv darauf ab, die Produktionsweisen in Karlsruhe und Süddeutschland umzugestalten und neu zu überdenken. Zur Interaktion mit diesen Themen und Materialien, sowohl im digitalen als auch im physischen Raum, lädt das Labor lokale ExpertInnen und BesucherInnen gleichermaßen ein an gemeinsamen Projekten zu arbeiten.
Spuren dieser Aktivitäten komplementieren ein ständig wachsenden Netzwerk.Das Wissen über diese Ressourcen wird durch die Erstellung eines Know-how-Glossars und einer Materialbibliothek destilliert, durch virtuelle und physische Workshops vermittelt, sowie durch die Präsentationen herausragender Projekte, die sich mit nachhaltigen Materialien befassen, kommuniziert.
Das Labor fungiert als Inkubator und Modell für Zusammenarbeit und Produktion, das im Einklang mit dem aktuellen Wandel der Staatlichen Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe steht.

- The Bio Design Lab is a hybrid and evolutive environment that exists in both the digital and physical space. Conceived as a platform for connection and collaboration with local partners and using local resources, the Lab hosts the presentation, education and transmission of knowledge. As students and experts are invited to work on bio-design related projects, visitors can explore and interact with the Lab’s production and lines of inquiry.
Projects within the Lab focus on the local region, its materials and possibilities, and actively aim to reshuffle and rethink modes of production in Karlsruhe and the south of Germany. Topics under exploration include Algae, Soil, Plants, Body, and Agriculture. To interact with these themes and related materials, both within the digital and physical space, the Lab invites local experts and visitors alike.
Within the Bio Design Lab, regional resources are collected by connecting with local partners; they are then distilled through the making of a know-how glossary and a material library, aiming to develop local materials. The knowledge around these resources is disseminated through virtual workshops and multimedia presentations of outstanding projects dealing with sustainable materials. Ultimately, traces of these activities will remain in a constantly growing network, both in the digital platform and in physical displays of existing and future objects.
The Lab works as an incubator and a model for collaboration and production that is in line with the current transformation of the Karlsruhe University of the Arts and Design Karlsruhe. It was first presented to the public in the context of Critical Zones, an exhibition at ZKM | Center for Art and Media.

- Der Titel dieser Ausstellung, "Between the 'No Longer' and the 'Not Yet'", stammt aus den Schriften von Victor Turner über Liminalität. Turner beschreibt Liminalität als einen Übergangszustand – einen Moment, in dem man eine frühere Rolle oder einen früheren Status verlassen hat aber noch nicht vollständig in eine neue Position eingetreten ist. Es ist ein Zustand der Ungewissheit und Transformation. Vertraute Strukturen lösen sich auf und lassen einen in einer undefinierten und instabilen Lage zurück.
Dieses Konzept spiegelt meine Erfahrung als Ausländerin in Deutschland wider. Ich habe Korea verlassen, befinde mich aber noch immer in einem Schwebezustand, ohne mich vollständig angekommen zu fühlen. Um diesen Zustand des Dazwischen auszudrücken, habe ich Flure als visuelle Metapher verwendet. Beim leisen Umherwandern durch diese Flure, beim Fotografieren aus der Distanz, bin ich mir selbst begegnet.
Aus dem fotografischen Projekt entwickelte sich die Videoarbeit "The Act of Cleaning" (2025), die gemeinsam mit den Fotografien gezeigt wird. Inspiriert von Mary Douglas' Ideen zu Reinigungsritualen – bei denen das Säubern Ordnung in das Chaos bringt –, habe ich das Putzen zu meinem eigenen Ritual gemacht. Douglas argumentiert, dass Gesellschaften Ordnung schaffen, indem sie Dinge in klare Kategorien einteilen. Doch Wesen oder Konzepte, die sich diesen Kategorien entziehen – wie Migrant*innen, Hybride oder diejenigen in Übergangszuständen –, werden oft als störend empfunden. In diesem Kontext wurde das Reinigen zu einem Weg, mit der Spannung des Dazwischenseins umzugehen.
Mit bloßen Händen wischte ich jede Stufe der Treppen ab, durch die ich mich bewegte. Die Reibung zwischen Lappen und Boden, das Geräusch des ausgewrungenen Wassers und das Echo meiner Schritte füllten den Flur. Der Boden wurde vollkommen durchnässt – die Grenze zwischen Reinigen und Verschmutzen verschwamm. Diese repetitive, beinahe meditative Handlung veränderte meine Beziehung zu diesen Räumen. Das Putzen wurde mehr als eine praktische Geste – es wurde zu einem Akt, meine Präsenz zu behaupten und sie zugleich zu hinterfragen.

- The title of this exhibition, "Between the 'No Longer' and the 'Not Yet'", comes from Victor Turner's writings on liminality. Turner describes liminality as a transitional state—when one has left behind a previous role or status but has not yet fully entered a new one. It is a state of ambiguity and transformation. Familiar structures dissolve, leaving one in an undefined and unstable position.
This concept reflects my experience as a foreigner in Germany. I left Korea, yet I find myself lingering in a liminal state, not fully settled. To convey this in-between state, I used hallways as a visual metaphor. Wandering through hallways quietly, photographing them from a distance, I came face to face with myself.
This photographic project developed into the video work, "The Act of Cleaning" (2025), which is presented alongside the photographs. Inspired by Mary Douglas's ideas on purification rituals—where cleaning imposes order on chaos—I chose cleaning as my own ritual. Douglas argues that societies create order by classifying things into clear categories. Yet, beings or concepts that defy these categories—such as migrants, hybrids, or those in transitional states—are often seen as unsettling. In this context, cleaning became a way to navigate the tension of existing in ambiguity.
Using my bare hands, I wiped down each step of the staircases I walked through. The friction between the rag and the floor, the sound of squeezing water, and the echo of my footsteps filled the hallway. The floor became completely soaked, blurring the boundary between cleaning and staining. This repetitive, almost meditative act transformed my relationship with these spaces. Cleaning became more than a practical gesture—it was a way to assert my presence while simultaneously questioning it.

- Das Konzept der „Selbstoptimierung“ hat eine zunehmende gesellschaftliche Relevanz erreicht, dementsprechend haben zahlreiche Apps, die sich auf den Körper, die Emotionen und das Selbstmanagement konzentrieren, nach und nach mein Leben durchdrungen.
Ich scheine gleichzeitig in zwei Formen zu existieren: einerseits als organisches Wesen, das aus Wahrnehmung, Widersprüchen und zufälligen Erfahrungen besteht; andererseits als digitales Modell, das von verschiedenen Anwendungen konstruiert wurde.
Allmählich gewöhnte ich mich daran, mich selbst über Zahlen zu messen und zu analysieren – von der Kalorienaufnahme über Schlafzyklen bis hin zu feinen Schwankungen der Herzfrequenz – doch dabei verlor ich zunehmend das Vertrauen in die natürliche Wahrnehmung meines Körpers.
Diese Programme geben vor, „personalisierte Dienste“ zu sein, verwandeln uns letztlich aber in ein einheitliches Datenformat, das sich bequem kategorisieren, vergleichen und extrahieren lässt.
Je mehr Daten es über mich gibt, desto weniger scheine ich mich selbst zu spüren.

- As “self-optimization” has become a widely accepted life concept, a large number of apps focusing on the body, emotions, and self-management have gradually infiltrated my life.
I seem to exist in two forms at the same time: one, an organic being composed of perception, contradictions, and incidental experiences; the other, a digital model constructed by various applications.
I gradually got used to measuring and examining myself through numbers—from calorie intake to sleep cycles and subtle fluctuations in heart rate—but in doing so, I slowly lost trust in my body’s natural perception.
These programs present themselves as “personalized services,” yet ultimately convert us into a single data format, convenient for categorization, comparison, and extraction.
The more data there is about me, the less I seem to feel myself.
