[...] Die Ausstellung "all the things you are." geht diesem Katalog nach und zeigt neben originalen Drucken, auch eine Auswahl an Manuskripten und Plänen. | Extensive Description | - Der Künstler und Grafiker Wolfgang Schmidt (* 24. Juli 1929; † 8. März 1995) begann 1972 mit der Gestaltung seines individuellen Zeichensystems: Den Lebenszeichen.
Bis 1979 waren von den geplanten 893 Zeichen 262 fertiggestellt, in Kombination miteinander ergeben sich aus ihnen über 394 Variationen. Ausgehend vom menschlichen Körper und seiner Umwelt, entwarf Wolfgang Schmidt einen Zeichenkatalog mit dem Ziel „den Kosmos seiner Gefühle und Erfahrungen zu vermessen“.
Die Ausstellung "all the things you are." geht diesem Katalog nach und zeigt neben originalen Drucken, auch eine Auswahl an Manuskripten und Plänen. Sie geben Aufschluss über Schmidts künstlerische Ansätze und zeigen die Zeichen in ihrer Anwendung auf andere Formate und Medien. Die Exponate in der Ausstellung werden durch neu entstandene Arbeiten ergänzt, welche die durch Schmidts Zeichensystem aufgeworfenen Fragen nach Identität, Emotion und Kommunikation aufgreifen.
Workshop, Ausstellung, Reader und Lecture-Talk sind in Zusammenarbeit mit Kindern, Kunstschaffenden, Designer*innen, Forscher*innen, sowie mit einigen seiner Wegbegleiter*innen entstanden. Die Formate kreisen dabei um das System der Lebenszeichen und setzen es zu der heutigen gesellschaftlichen Neuausrichtung im Umgang mit Emotionen und Zeichen in Verhältnis.
Begleitet wurde die Eröffnung der Ausstellung am 15. April 2019 von einem gemeinsamen Lecture-Talk mit dem Emotionshistoriker Philipp Nielsen vom Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung in Berlin.

By 1979, 262 of the planned 893 signs had been completed; in combination with each other, they resulted in over 394 variations. Based on the human body and its environment, Wolfgang Schmidt designed a catalog of signs with the aim of "measuring the cosmos of his feelings and experiences".
The exhibition "all the things you are." explores this catalog and shows original prints as well as a selection of manuscripts and plans. They shed light on Schmidt's artistic approaches and show the signs in their application to other formats and media. The exhibits in the exhibition are supplemented by newly created works that address the questions of identity, emotion and communication raised by Schmidt's system of signs.
The workshop, exhibition, reader and lecture-talk were created in collaboration with children, artists, designers, researchers and some of his companions. The formats revolve around the system of signs of life and relate it to today's social reorientation in dealing with emotions and signs.
The opening of the exhibition on April 15, 2019 was accompanied by a joint lecture talk with the emotion historian Philipp Nielsen from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin.
